Frances E. Willard lived in Illinois. Her influence over men and
women was great. She was so highly respected and honored that she
was considered one of the two most prominent persons of her state, the
other leing Abraham Ljncoln. Her statue is placed beside that of Lin
coln in the "Hall of Fame," Washington, D. C, to represent the
state of Illinois.
She was a woman of medium size, with fair complexion, light hair
and blue eyes. She began her work as a school teacher, but soon gave
up that work in order to take care of an invalid sister. After the death
of this sister Miss Willard became the leader of an organization in Chi
cago known as "The Woman's Christian Temperance Union." In
this position, w7here she was afforded the opportunity to speak in pub
lic, she soon excelled in oratory. It is said that the secret of her pow
er as a public speaker was her motherly personality.
The prominent characteristics of Frances E. Willard were charity
and progressiveness. Her whole life abounds with examples of her
charitable disposition, while an incident that shows her progressiveness
is her desire to have her body cremated after death.

The Third Annual Reunion of the Chemawa Alumni Association was
held on May 28th, the day set aside as Alumni Day on the commence
ment week schedule. A goodly number of visiting Alumni were pres
ent, who came from various parts of the Pacific Nortlrwest.
Special arrangements were made so that they could be entertained at
the.Domestic Science Department. Those in charge made every effort
to make their stay with us as enjoyable as possible.
