A week before C hristm as a party of our people w ent to P ortland to p u r
chase th e C hristm as presents for the school. T h e p arty consisted of M r.
and M rs. S m ith, Mrs. Loos, M rs. T rachtenberg, Miss W h ite and Miss
Sprague. Good B argains w ere secured and good selections made.
B andm aster Loos and his boys have am ply dem onstrated of late th eir
ability to render in a finished style h igh-grade music of the better class.
A week or two ago they played a splendid concert at G ervais and followed
it up w ith a fine concert at hom e a n ig h t or so later. L ong live th e b a n d !
D urin g the holiday season Miss Phyllis Cooper was stricken down
w ith appendictis. She was h u rried ly conveyed to T h e Salem H ospital,
w here she subm itted to an operation, w hich proved successful. She
is now considered out of danger and g etcin g alo n g nicely, we are pleased
to state.
A t the E m ployes’ Mess on C hristm as Day every preparation had been
m ade for a fine d in n er. Splendidly set and heavily laden tables, su s
ta in in g only the choicest of seasonable delicacies, in room s tastefully d ec
orated, certainly caught th e popular fancy. M rs. Pugh and her m any
assistants, to whom credit is due, have the th a n k s of all.

T h e basketball team is m aking a very good show ing at this early stage
of the season. Chem aw a opened the season with an easy victory over
Philom ath College, on the home floor.
T h e College boys were sim ply out-classed in every departm ent of the
gam e. C apt. Jim and Downie sm othered th e College guards by their
fast playing and basket-throw ing. M cDonald and C ham berlin easily
out-played the visiting forw ards, w hile Service at center was all over
the floor. A fter playing ten m inutes in the second half, th e score was
32 to 6; C apt. Jim then sent in four second-team players. T h e new
men did not work well, as they m ade only two points w hile the visitors
made eleven points. T h e gam e closed w ith a 34 to 17 score.
O ur boys found very w orthy opponents in th e O . A. C. q u in te t. T he
A ggies play the Intercollegiate gam e, w hile we play the A. A . V.
T his change in the gam e was a handicap which we could not overcome
until the opening of the second half. H ow ever, the lead was too much
