represent the progress th at is being made by the Indians in various sec
tions of the co u n try . T h e efforts being made by the N ational Indian
A ssociation to support such an in stitu tio n as the Good Sam aritan H os

who will buy these holiday stickers at th is seventh a n
nual sale do not know how th e charity stam p ides or-

It was war th a t bro u g h t forth the charity stam p - o u r
Civil W ar of ’61 to ’65. Some of your grandm others
first played “ post office” w ith stickers sim ilar to Red Cross Seals way
back in 1862, w hen they conceived the idea of selling stam ps at fairs for
th e benefit of th e relief funds for the soldiers' hospitals in Brooklyn. Bos
ton and elsew here. N early $1,000,000 were raised in th is way before
1865. A fter the war th is m ethod of raising money was discontinued in
th is country for a generation, although it found vogue in P ortugal. S w it
zerland. A ustria, F rance, Spain, D enm ark. N orw ay. Russia, Sweden
and other E uropean countries. T h ere are now several thousands of d if
ferent types of charity stam ps used in all p arts of the world, as many as
forty being used in A ustria for c h ild re n ’s hospitals alone.
Stam ps on seals were first used to get m oney for the anti-tuberculosis
