T h e latest of these, the Good Sam aritan H ospital, located at Indian
W ells, A rizona, was erected in the sum m er and fall of 1912, and was
partially occupied on Septem ber 15th of th at year when the medical su
perin ten d en t established reaidence there and oegan cam p w ork. 'I he
hospital w ards were opened for p atients and the dispensary was ready for
medical treatm en t on April 1, 1914. T he central portion of th is building
contains on the ground floor a reception room , n u rses’ room s, dispensary,
kitchen and d in in g ro o m and a closet for medical supplies, linens, etc.
T he second story of this portion of the b u ilding consists of one large
room . A t eith er side of the central portion are hospital w ards, the m e n 's
w ards to th e left and the w om en’s to the rig h t. In front of each w ard
is a sleeping porch. T h e b u ilding is provided w ith m odern conveniences
such as baths and h eatin g plant.
Of all of the agencies em ployed by the G overnm ent or by volunteer
w orkers for the civilization and Christianization of any prim itive people
the m odern hospital has come to be recognized as one of th e m ost ef
fective. W h at is tru e of prim itive people generally is tru e of the In dians.
T herefore, th is, the latest of th e m issions established by the N ational
In d ian A ssociation, located in the m idst of the g reat N avajo trib e has a
rem arkable field of w ork. T h at the N avajos respond cordially to the
