T h u rsd a y evening, A pril 30, m arked the close, except for the In ter-
Society debate, of the Reliance Society for the y ear. T alk s given b y
several m em bers show ed a general satisfaction over the y e a r’s w ork and
an optim istic view for th e forthcom ing year. F or the fifth consecutive
year the society has m aintained its leadership in literary w ork. W hether
or not the leadership will be m aintained th ro u g h th e n ex t debate rem ains
to be seen.
T h e past year has not been so successful in general as m ig h t have
been. Several good speakers have been developed, but on th e w hole the
m ajority have failed to carry th ro u g h th eir program s as well as they
m ight have done.
I his has been due to the fact th a t the m em bers are
new to such work and y o unger than th e average.
W ith the stro n g er m em bers developed th is year it is hoped th a t th e
m em bership n ex t year will be so welded together th a t we will have u n
lim ited enth u siasm , and have energy and force enough to carry before
us all opposition; th a t our unity will develop a sp irit w hich is necessary
for success in any in stitu tio n . A dvisory Member.

T he E xcelsior L iterary Society adjourned “ sine d ie ” A pril 29, 1914.
V ery good program s, consisting of recitations, readings, songs and in
stru m en tal q u artets were given d u rin g the last tw o m eetings.
T h e advisory m em bers gave a review of the y e a r’s w ork, em phasizing
not only th e good w ork done bv th e boys, but also calling a tte n tio n to
th e w eaknesses of th e society, and tellin g how these may be overcome.
Incidentally, too, some good advice was given for the fu tu re.
H e advised the Society to organize a glee club at th e beginning of n ext
y e a r’s w ork and to m ake it a perm anent part of the society; th at boys to
sing well m ust sing together often; the sam e should be done w ith th e in
strum ental music; th a t th is would be a g reat im provem ent over the
m ethod heretofore followed; that a society to be stro n g m ust depend upon
all of its m em bers doing th eir share of w ork, and not upon a few. M any
in terestin g debates have been given th is year, both prepared and im
prom ptu. An im portant feature of th e y e a r's work and one of th e m ost in
teresting has been the im prom ptu debate. T his is a good way to have
overcom e em barrassm ent.
T he society voted to give a short en tertain m en t to the school on the
evening of May 21. W e th in k this a more fitting en d in g of the y e a r’s
w ork than to give a p arty .
