th in g reasonable w ithin our power to ju stify th is appropriation and
insure the best results obtainable. T h is accom plished we have laid a
substantial foundation for all of our work in solving the Indian problem ,
and m ade a long step forw ard looking tow ard th eir equipm ent for the re ­
sponsibilities of c itiz en sh ip .”
Com m issioner Sells desires th a t all em ployes in the service shall assist
in every way possible to fu rth er his efforts for the suppression of the li­
quor traffic am ong Indians, and adds the follow ing note especially for
said employes:
It is my g reat desire th a t every em ployee in the Indian Service shall
realize the trem endous im portance of the liquor suppression w ork, and
ex e rt his best efforts and influence for the protection of the Indian from
th is, his w orst enem y.
I desire th is letter to be regarded as a personal com m unication to every
em ployee in the In d ian Service, and that it be seriously treated as such,
and I especially request th at on the 6th day of A pril, 1914, the sam e be
read to the stu d en t body of every Indian School, including those under
governm ent, m ission, or private su p erv isio n .”

In spite of th e statem ents of a num ber of individuals who have re­
cently claim ed th at they have found a “ c u re ” for consum ption, T he
N ational A ssociation for the S tudy and Prevention of T uberculosis, the
highest au th o rity on this disease in A m erica, in a bulletin published to ­
day declares th a t there is no inform ation at hand to ju stify the belief that
any specific cure for tuberculosis has been discovered which deserves the
confidence of th e medical profession and the people.
B acking up these statem ents, the U nited States P ublic H ealth Service
declares th at outside of th e three essentials in the treatm ent of consum p­
tion, nam ely rest, fresh air, and good food, “ there is no d ru g known
how ever rare or expensive it may be th at has any curative action in this
disease, and all rem edies advertised as such are to be avoided. Patent
cough m edicines are harm ful; radium , x-rays or electricity in any of its
form s have no special value in tuberculosis of the lungs. No serum has
yet been found th at will cure it, and there is no plaster or poultice which
has an effect on the disease itself.

extensive cam paign for th e suppression of the num erous fake consum p­
tion cures w hich are annualy ch eatin g the public of the U nited States out
of no less th an $15,000,000 and besides are depriving num erous inno-
