Rev. Carl H. E lliott, th e Presbyterian m in ister of Salem, was a visi

on A pril 5th. T hey were delighted w ith all th a t th ey saw at Chem aw a.
M r. J. H . Blair of N ew port, O regon, visited Chem aw a recently. H e
is an uncle of Miss S k ip to n , and although 82 years of age, is a re m a rk
ably well preserved gentlem an.
Prof. W alter M. S m ith, su p erin ten d en t of public in stru ctio n of M ar
ion Co., and G. H . P atterson, Ph. D ., of W illam ette U niversity have
addressed our general assemblies in a m ost able m anner on a couple of
recent S unday evenings.
Miss Bessie K . May arrived at Chem aw a recently and entered upon
h er duties as m atron for the M cBride H all girls. Miss May at one
tim e was em ployed at the T u lalip (W a s h .) school and has had such e x
perience in the service as to m ake her a valuable person to Chem aw a.
W e extend a cordial welcome to her.
\ \ illiam R eady has secured the splendid H o rn stein er violin w hich
for a long tim e was th e property of R utliyn T u rn e y . It is a rare old
in stru m en t of exquisite tone and carry in g power, the w ork of M artin
H orn stein er of the year 1790. A nother musical note of interest is that
Chem aw a is now the hom e of one of the fam ous double basses of the
w orld. It was m ade in R otterdam , H olland, in th e year 1648, by
Joseph W rent. For more than 30 years it was played in the fam ous
P hilharm onic O rchestra of New Y ork by M r E . H . S traubel. Mr.
T u rn e y secured it of Mr. S traubel recently.
