N June 20, 1913, the Chemawa Alumni Association was
organized, with William Lovelace and Gordon Ho-
bucket president and secretary, respectively. It was
well attended, of which Mrs. Brewer was the oldest
member, being a member of the class of 1885. Brief
talks were given by those representing each year’s
class. Mr. Sanders, who spoke on "School Spirit,”
made one of the best speeches heard at the banquet.
While the association is still at its infancy, it is progressing very nicely.
It is an organization which our dear Alma Mater has needed for a number
of years. It is expected by those closely connected with it that it will be
a success in every way.
The object of the association is closely to unite the ones who have left
the school as graduates and returned students, and to become better ac
quainted with one another; to render assistance to one another if needed.
Above all, the association aims to do all it can toward the betterment of
the Salem Indian School.
Our communication with graduates and returned students, show that
there are a great number of them doing very nicely, each in his or her
own line of work. Let Chemawa send out her graduates into the world
and compete with the many millions of people and be proud to claim them
as her products; and in return we must say proudly that Chemawa is our
Alma Mater. But the competition made by graduates must be success
ful in every wav.
In order to be a credit to the school, and to the Indian race, we must
try and succeed in anything that we may undertake to do. No one must
start out into the world unprepared and expect to become a successful
businessman. It takes time, it requires conscientious effort to prepare
yourselves to fight your wav.
In the present generation competition is becoming keener and keener,
and although a good and thorough education is not required bv law, it is
the duty of every patriotic citizen to gain better training and greater
knowledge in order that he may be of more use to his country, as well
as to himself.
