N th e school office sets the m any trophies won by the
different athletic team s. A few years ago our team s
com peted w ith the largest colleges in the w est, and
on account of being superior in baseball we have a
num ber of trophies. T hese trophies b rin g to my
m ind th e hard work and loyalty of our athletic m an
ager, I). E . Brewer, to whom honor is do.
T he team won two trophies in th e year of 1899, w inning one from
the W illam ette V alley C h au tau q u a A ssociation and the other from the
R egatta A ssociation at A storia, O regon. Tw o in 1900; one at the W il
lam ette Valley C h au tau q u a A ssociation; th e other from M ultnom ah
Club, at P o rtlan d . T h e last two of the baseball trophies won was one
at Brooks and th e other at Dallas.
In 1907 our boys took up relay w ork and won four consecutive years
from the P o rtlan d Y. M .C . A. relay team . But since then on the D octor’s
advice the relay w ork has been abandoned.
O ur boys also won a four-m ile relay on Ju ly 4, 1908, for which they
received a trophy. O ne of our boys, A m os Sm oker, won his m atch at
th e C herry City W restlin g T o u rn a m en t, and presented the school the
trophy as a rem em brance.
A cup was won by Com pany “ A ” under the com m and of C aptain
A ndy W alker in 1913. A nother trophy was won in the same year by
Com pany “ C ” under th e com m and of C aptain A lvina S m ith. These
trophies are good exam ples set by our form er team s for our fu tu re
team s to follow. As our greatest athlete, M r. R. Sanders, said at the
football reception, “T h ere they are, go get some m o re.” Let us adopt
th is saying as o u r m otto.

Prof. K ilpatrick of the Salem H igh School responded to a toast on
“ W inning H is L e tte r” at the football reception on Ja n u ary seventeenth.
Prof. K ilpatrick has taken a very stro n g interest in the student activities
here at Chem aw a and has been very obliging by responding to any re
quest to speak to the stu d en ts.

of his response were th at those stu d en ts who win th eir letters should al-
