There are so many crows here, one wonders where they come from;
they crow all day and do not seem to care whether they ever find time to
look for worms. Then at night we wonder where the countless num
bers of frogs live. They croak in all tones and at all times.
Chemawa has made many improvements since last summer. Last
summer they built a new blacksmith shop and this winter they made a
new silo and put up a steel water tank.
Fourth B
This is a very good school and I am glad I am going to school. I am
learning right along. The children should study when they are at home
so that when they go to school they will know7 their lessons w7ell.
My home is in Kodiak, Alaska. It was once covered with ashes from
a volcano near by, but they have it all cleared aw7ay now7 and it is as
l)eatrtiful as before and maybe better. It is not very far from Seward
and Vtldez; if you look on the map you will find it. Kodiak is nearly
as large is Valdez, but the only thing is, we haven’t got cement walks,
which I hope will soon be seen in Kodiak.
We AlAaka children are glad that the government is doing something to
open up Alaska. The railroads will be a great help to the country.
We are working in the orchard pruning the apple trees and doing some
other odd work that needs to be done. The buds are already out.
Mr. Devol gave a very nice talk last Monday about the flood they had
in Ohio last year. We enjoyed it very much. Come again, Mr. Devol.
They are going to have a government railroad in Alaska. It will be
a great thing for the Alaskans.
A letter has been received from Martin Colby stating that he will be
back to school soon.
Flowers are beginning to bloom everywhere on the campus. Aside
from these w7e have roses blooming all year around. Three cheers for
Chemawa!
There were a whole lot of improvements made at the kitchen during
the past w7eek.
Thomas Johansen is helping the concrete workers at the kitchen. Thom
as is learning something that is worth while know ing.
Third Grade
The Nut-Crackers have their new7 pennant and are going to have a new7
song about the Orange and black.
