departed, each one bearing th e m em ory of a d elightfully inform al oc
casion and a deeper pride in A laska.
Miss M ary Long, teacher of E n g lish in the Salem H igh School, has
been engaged by S u p erin ten d en t W adsw orth to give special help to the
girls of the literary societies of th is school. Miss Long came to Salem
last Septem ber. She is a g rad u ate of an eastern college and has had
special tra in in g in literary society w ork. W e are fo rtu n ate in being
able to secure her services one nig h t a week for a few m onths.
T he student body and teachers of th is school extend hearty c o n g ra tu
lations to the boys of H askell In stitu te for the united stand they have
taken against stam ping out th e use of tobacco in th eir school.
T he S tate S uperintendent of O regon, Mr, C hurchill, has an article in
the O regon Journal of F eb ru ary 1, headed " T h e Boys’ C u rse .” H e is
in au g u ratin g a w ar on the use of cigarettes in th e public schools in this
state. T h e O regon w om en’s organizations are fighting in th e same
field to save the boys from this dreadful and harm ful habit. We hope
the Chem aw a boys will soon follow th e exam ple of H askell.
T he appearance of our library has been greatly im proved by the re g u
lation shelves m ade bv Peter A lpheus under th e supervision of his in
stru cto r, M r. W oods. T he able m anner in w hich the work has been
done reflects credit upon Peter and his d ep artm en t as well. T h ere are
now 1200 volumes of carefully selected books as well as the leading
m agazines in th e lib rary . T h e library is increasing daily in favor with
the students.
Mrs. Brace, departm ental teacher of b'nglish and H istory, gave the
stu d en ts an in terestin g sketch of L ongfellow ’s life, also reading parts of
" T h e C h ild re n ’s H o u r” and " T h e Skeleton in A rm o r” at assem bly a
short tim e ago.
W e th a n k Mr. W oods for the much needed reading desk he has made
for th e A ssem ble H all.
