Barrett, and Maude Lowry, are now at Haskell Institute taking a busi
ness course. Letters received from the boys state they are working
hard and like the school. We wish them success.
After a two weeks’ vacation during the holidays the students have
begun work in earnest to make the remainder of the year the most prof
itable of the entire school year. Good work is being done in all the
grades.
Commission men have been busy shipping several car loads of potatoes
from here to different points. The potatoes being shipped were raised
on the farms in the vicinity of the school. A great quantity will be
shipped at a later time.
The school was favored with a visit from an old friend a short time
ago in the person of Judge John L. Childs of Del Norte C ount\, Cali
fornia. The Judge has long been an ardent supporter of the rights of
the Indian and takes a particular interest in the Indians of his county.
We regret that his visit was so short and hope to see him again.
Not all schools in the Indian Service can boast of roses blooming on
their campus at this time of the year. However, Chemawa is proud of
the fact that roses can be see at this season and by examining the violet
beds we find violets in large numbers. Christinas day the employees’
dining-room tables were decorated with roses picked from bushes grow -
ing on the school campus.
The water tower and tank, now under construction, will fill a long
felt want. The bottom of the tank is eighty feet above ground. In
case of fire, w’ater can easily be thrown over the top of the highest
building of the school.
