sta rt. W hen the corn reaches an advanced grow th, once per w eek
will be often enough. I)o not stop cultivation until the crop is well
advanced to m atu rity .
To possess quality, popcorn should m atu re near the first of Septem
ber. M aturity may be hastened by using phosphatic fertilizers on the
soil liefore the corn is planted, such as fish scraps, bone meal, or rock
phosphate.
S ixty bushels per acre is considered a fair yield, but it has been dem
onstrated th a t over one h u ndred bushels can be grow n per acre here in
O regon.
A bushel of dry ears w eighs thirty-five pounds. T h ere are seven
pounds of cob. So it takes seventy pounds of ears to make a bushel of
shelled co rn —56 pounds.
As soon as the kernels take on th e hard flinty condition, it is ready
to harvest. H usk shortly after m aturity and p u t the corn w here it will
dry quite rapidly. H ang ou t of the reach of rats and mice, and sell as
soon as it reaches the popping stage.

H E m em bership of the V. W . C. A. has increased so
th at the schoolroom which has been their m eeting
place can no longer accom odate the members. T he
Association now holds its Sunday evening devotional
service in the chapel. At the first regular m eeting
of the V. W .’s after the b eg inning of the new year
th e usual order of the service was changed to suit
the season. Instead of responding to roll call w ith a Bidle verse, each
girl, w hen her nam e was called, gave a good resolution th at she had
