FARM ING
jo s e p ii D U N B A R , Snohomish Tribe, Washington
O W N 162 acres of land inherited from m y m other, who
had received an allotm ent. My farm , one mile long
and one-fourth of a mile wide, is located on th e T u -
lalip R eservation, Snohom ish C ounty, in the S tate of
W ash in g to n , and can be conveniently divided into
fields as I wish them to be arranged. T he tract is
situated near the G reat N o rth ern R ailroad, about a
m ile and a-lialf from the tow n of M arysville.
A county road w hich crosses the reservation divides my farm into
two parts. It is also crossed bv a creek in such a m anner th a t it gives
an excellent site for a dw elling on one side and for a barn on th e o p
posite side of th e stream .
One p art of the tract is covered w ith tim ber w hich I will cut for
wood and sell in M arysville. It will cost about $2.25 to cu t and de
liver th e cord wood in the tow n, w here I can sell it for $4.25 per cord.
It is estim ated th a t 1,000 cords of wood can be obtained from the tim
ber on the trac t. I am safe in saying th a t I can realize at least $ 2 ,0 0 0
from th e sale of the w ood. I expect to use th is am ount in b u ild in g a
house and barn and m ak in g some im provem ents on the farm . In b u ild
ing th e house and barn I will use some of the lum ber obtained from
my tract.
I will build a m odern four or five-room bungalow , with bath, closets,
and porches in connection, on th e site along th e creek w hich I have
m entioned before. My idea is to m ake the dw elling convenient, and
to do so I will have the well drilled close to the house, piping th e
w ater to different parts of the house and law n. I will use a small g aso
line engine for pum ping w ater into the storage tan k , also using it for
spraying, etc.
T h e barn will be bu ilt across th e creek from the house and sufficient
ly large to sh elter tw o or th ree horses, four or five cows, and the food
for them d u rin g the w inter m onths. I will build an im plem ent house
a short distance from th e barn.
T h e garden will be on the east side of the house w here it can be co n
veniently irrigated from the well in case of dry w eather. In order to
raise a good supply of vegetables the garden m ust be large and have
unusually good soil.
A side from the land know n as the tide flats, and the tim ber, th ere is
a small tract th a t will have to be cleared. T h e rem ainder will be d i
vided into five different fields, and an orchard co n tain in g about eight
