On May 2 Mrs. H en ry D illstrom left for T u lalip , W ash ., w here she
joined her husband. Mr. Dillstrom has a position there as dairym an
under Dr. B uchanan, w ho is the su p erin ten d en t.
In due season S u p t. W adsw orth received an invitation to the C om
m encem ent exercises at the Indian In d u strial School of G enoa, N ebras
ka. T he exercises were held on A pril 16 and 17.
E lm er Lafonso, w ell-know n In d ian tenor singer who visited Che-
m awa a few weeks ago in com pany w ith Dr. John N . Steele, has te r
m inated his engagem ent and again visited friends here more recen tly .
A t one tim e Mr. Lafonso was a stu d en t at Chem aw a, w hich fact in
creases our pride in him and his successes, w hich we are pleased to note
are m any.
T h e S ou th ern Pacific is engaged at a colossal u n d erta k in g here at
Chem aw a, th e task of raisin g the track some five or six feet w here it
crosses w hat in by-gone days was know n as Lake Labish. A large
force is at w ork and it is estim ated th at th ere will be necessary som e
th in g m ore th an 25,000 cubic yards of gravel to com plete the fill. T h e
gravel is bro u g h t here from the big pit at C anby, nearly 30 miles from
Chem aw a.
Mr. T hom as h av in g failed to re tu rn to his position as tailor at the
school Mr. T racy H atch has been appointed to the vacancy. D uring
th e past few weeks a gentlem an by th e nam e of Mr. F rien d has been
em ployed tem porarily. T racy H atch is know n to th e m ajority of our
readers, having for m any years been enrolled as a pupil at Chemawa.
h o r some years of late he has held positions in Salem clothing and
tailo rin g establishm ents and has m ade good in every w ay, we are
pleased to state.
On th e evening of A pril 30 nearly everybody on th e g ro u n d s repaired
to the gym nasium to p articipate in or w itness an old-fashioned spell
in g m atch. M em bers of the senior and ju n io r classes and the 8th and
7th grades were contestants. F irst, second and th ird prizes w ere of
fered—$1.00 by M r. T u rn e y and boxes of candy by M r. Sm ith and
M rs. H enderson. Miss Royer gave out th e w ords and one after a n o th
er of the pupils failed in spelling and took th e ir seats. F in ally all were
seated excep tin g th ree g irls— M aude Low ry, E th el R oberts and Ella
M cCully. T hen the crowd began to speculate as to who w ould be last
on the floor. In a short tim e E lla w ent dow n and all knew th at she
had th e third place and the prize th a t it carried. M aude and E thel
spelled on and both failed on the sam e w ord, m ak in g them a tie to th at
point. T h e tie was spelled off and M aude won it. W e see an im
mense am ount of good in a spelling m atch and are pleased to report
th a t one or two more m atches are scheduled for the n ex t few weeks.
