'H E m em bers of th e Band w ere invited to attend the
Salem Bridge Day, w hich was held on M arch 19th,
in honor of the opening of th eir new railroad bridge
w hich was com pleted across th e W illam ette River.
T h e tow n was all decorated w ith flags and o th er dec­
orations th at were h u n g by th e people. T h e bands
played th ro u g h o u t th e day, and in the forenoon the
five bands in attendence m arched to th e bridge, w here they had the
pleasure of seeing th e first trainload of people cross in the passenger
train , am ong them was Mr. W adsw orth, our su p erin ten d en t. A fter
the train had crossed the bridge, the A m erican flag was used as a g ate'
w ay. A bout a half h o u r later the train retu rn ed ; on the front of the e n ­
gine was G overnor W est, of O regon, and other prom inent m en. T h e
train stopped w ithin a few yards of the flag, which was rem oved, and
the G overn o r’s little d au g h ter threw carnations on both sides to the
people.
In th e afternoon th ere was a long autom obile parade, all carry in g
banners of every description. L ater in th e afternoon our baseball team
m et th e W illam ette U niversity team on th eir field; w here there was a
large g ath erin g of people to w itness th e gam e. T he Chem aw a Band
did its share in boosting for the bridge, and helped the baseball team
to carry the honors from the collegians, the score being four to th ree in

E X C E L S I O R -N O N P A R E I L D E B A T E
R ecently tw o literary societies of the school, the E xcelsior and the
N onpareil, debated th e question, “ Resolved th a t U nited S tates Senators
and the P resident of th e U nited States should be elected by popular
v o te ." T h e E xcelsiors, defending the affirm ative side of the question,
won the decision of th e judges. T h e w in n in g team are Patsy B arrett
and R eggie Downie. T h e N onpareils were represented by Lubova Sift-
soff and E leanor M cCully. Both societies are ju stly proud of the effort
made by th eir debaters. I t is rum ored th a t the N onpareils would like
another chance to m eet th e same society in a sim ilar friendly contest
