any egotistical feeling in this matter, but confess to a legitimate pride
in the recognition which our efforts have received. Nor are we in the
smallest degree rivals of our fellow printers. We are playing a game
all our own, for our own instruction and the benefit of our school and
our readers. We are always pleased to see the many samples of fine
work which others send to our table and do not consider ourselves their
competitors in any sense, nor them ours. There is glory enough for all.
“ Y E Y U L E -T ID E S O N G E ”
W e desire to call attention to Ye Yule-tide Songe, ’ ’ an original poem
by Dr. Charles Milton Buchanan, which appears in this issue. We
have seen many poems during the recent yule-tide season, some of
which struck a responsive chord within us and which we considered
splendid, but to us, all things considered, the poem which we publish
in this issue is more in keeping with the Christmas spirit and idea of
things than the others we have read. It awakens within us ideas and
fancies of times we have read about in our youth, when the yule-tide of
the “long, long ago” was observed in “ Merri? England.”
We regret that we could not have published the poem in our De
cember number, but it reached us just a trifle too late. We always ap
preciate, as do our readers, articles from the pen of Dr. Buchanan and
consider ourselves fortunate in being favored with “ copy” of so high
an order. For the benefit of those not informed we wish to state that
Dr. Buchanan is superintendent at the Tulalip Indian Agency in Wash
ington.
Y O U R R E S O L U T IO N
It has grown to be a custom with many people to make what is termed
a New Year’s resolution. This is not so bad. provided the resolution
is a good one and lived up to in every detail. But it is also too true
that the custom of breaking these good resolutions prevails likewise.
A good resolution is splendid in the making and observation, but why
anybody should await the dawning of the first of the year to start doing
what is right is beyond our conception of reasonable acts. Right “ now”
is the time to start in on a good resolution, no matter whether it is
January or July; furthermore, observe that resolution first, last and all
the time. Stick to it like a wax plaster!
