HE following outline of agricultural matter will be fol
lowed in connection with work as it is being done at
the Salem Indian Training School. Samples of
practical lessons given from outline will appear in
each issue of the American:
Farm Crops
Teach the pupil to know common farm and garden seeds on
sight. Have a collection conveniently arranged for study
after the pupil has handled each kind.
Have the pupil test seeds for vitality. Teach why this is
important. (Dead seeds, poor seeds, weak seeds, mean
lost effort, poor crop, poverty).
Teach the pupil to know the appearance of each plant from
the kinds of seeds taught.
Kinds of crops to grow and their uses.
(Pupil, the climate of your home must be considered in
answering this question for yourself).
Time of planting each kind of seed, period of growth,
means of harvesting, and methods of storing.
Farm Soils Kinds of soil: Sandy, gravelly, clayey, peaty, limy, loam.
Composition of soil: Rock particles, decaying vegetable
matter, decaying animal remains, and substances formed
by chemical changes (fertility).
Study of soil moisture, temperature and aeration.
Methods used to make soils produce crops.

grafting, or cuttings. (Lessons given in connections with
real practice).
Materials needed: Sharp knives, boxes of earth, cord and
wax.
