Schools are some of the im portant forw ard m ove­
m ents th a t have taken place in th e last q u arte r of a
cen tu ry .
T h e co n tin u o u s question of why do so m any young
men seek the city? and w hy do th e m ajority of th e boys refuse to attend
school after they are large enough to assert th eir own authority? has
been p artly answ ered by pointing the questioner to treeless, fenceless,
dilapidated and altogether u n attractiv e d istrict school grounds and the
com fortless, crowded and ill-ventilated school b uilding.
B eautifying the school has been sadly neglected until the last few
years w hen patrons have begun to realize th a t to m ake school life in ­
teresting to the child it m ust be made attractiv e and com fortable in the
way of good buildings and clean, neat, w ell-kept yards.
For m any years men have spent vast am ounts of m oney on their
hom es, but never gave th e school a th o u g h t, nor a dollar and not
even a day.

and caring for trees and flowers about th e school yard, seeing th a t the
grounds and out-b u ild in g s are neat and in order, th a t there is a cistern
