Practical handbook on astrology by Susan Jackson Astrology For Yourself by Douglas Bloch and Demetra George. Wingbow Press, Berkeley, California. If you have always wanted to learn astrology but have felt intimidated by the seemingly foreign symbols and terminology, then Astrology For YOurself is for you. Douglas Bloch and Demetra George have designed and created a step-by-step format that allows readers to teach themselves as trology. The value of this book is that it offers the basics of as trology through teaching personal horoscope interpretation. Imagine the enormity of simply presenting the language of astrology in a clear, solid style that readers can follow. Astrology is a science and an intuitive art that weaves distinct patterns in its richness, yet it can remain indecipherable to many would-be students. The authors begin with the concept of astrology as a language of energy that exists within ourselves and in the world around us. Using a workbook for mat with easy-to-follow exercises, Astrology For Yourself is a prac tical and systematic approach to decoding astrology. Any “self-help” or “how-to” book needs to be well-organized and attractive. Again, Bloch and George have mastered the art of arranging their material in a man ner that will both delight and en courage their audience. Plenty of writing space is provided in each section. At the end of every chapter, journal entries can be recorded as students progress through their studies. Perhaps the true test of any book rests in the quality and con tent of the information presented. Astrology For Yourself scores high marks in this area. It is excellent astrology, far surpassing most of the literature that the public is generally acquainted with. After providing the astrological building blocks (planets, signs and houses—the what, how and where), the workbook goes into interpreting vocational and rela tionship needs that are shown in a horoscope. IN a time when infor mation abounds but is so often im practical and unusable, this section of the book will prove to be of great value to many readers. Other applications of astrology are dis cussed, including medical astrology, astro-economic, political astrology, astrological counseling and electional astrology (the tim ing of events such as marriage or buying a home). Understanding current cycles in our lives has taken on increasing importance as daily existence becomes more complex. Astrology provides the key to perceiving the significance of transitions and stages in human development. Transformation Game by Laura Phillips Looking for a gift that’s useful as gloves, healthier than Almond Roca, as loving as a dozen roses—and a bit more unusual? For someone impor tant—maybe yourself—check out this exciting new board game. You won’t see it advertised on TV; it’s a de cidedly un-trivial pursuit. In fact, it’s different from the start, as players choose a favorite stone or crystal for their markers. Squares on the board are decorated with color ful symbols like a winged heart repre senting “service” and a lightning bolt for “intuitive flash.” And the playing cards read: “By being yourself you make it safe for others to be themselves. Gain 4 Awareness tokens.” Or, “You are set back by resistance on your present level. Take 2 Pains.” Or, “Leap to any Miracle Square now.” Well, it sure ain’t Monopoly! Wel come to the Transformation Game, created by Kathy Tyler and Joy Drake, developers of the popular Angel Cards. Kathy and Joy met at Find horn, a spiritual community in Scot land, where their collaboration began with the Planetary Game and the Game of Life weekend workshops. “The workshops are wonderful,” Joy explains, “but not everyone has the time, money, or opportunity to par ticipate. Now, we’ve finally got a ver sion of the Game in a box! It takes less time, doesn’t need leaders; it’s simpler, but with the same essence.” The Game can be played alone or with up to four people. Each player chooses an issue of current personal importance, such as “coping with stress” or “expressing feelings hon estly,” as a Focus. Traveling along in dividual Life Paths, players encounter blue Setback Cards, which reveal ob stacles, and yellow Insight Cards, which offer ideas toward change. Angel Cards name spiritual qualities players can draw on while exploring their Unconscious Envelopes, dealing with Pain, and gaining Awareness. Stimulating and informative, the Game mirrors real life, highlighting each player’s growing edge in her/his Focus area. The process offers clear feedback on skills (decision-making, for example), and helps players deter mine priorities, recognize needs and strengths, and develop valuable inner resources. The adventure moves through four levels (physical, emo tional, mental, spiritual), enhanced by easy-to-follow instructions, coopera tive and flexible rules, and lots of im aginative surprises. The Transformation Game is de signed to bring out a player’s intuitive, reflective, creative mood and abilities. It’s both thoughtful and playful, open ing the heart and mind to new per spectives. Actually, it reminds me of tarot, or I Ching: the results are simi larly intriguing, useful, and often breathtakingly accurate. The Game is a tool, a way to contact inner wisdom regarding the questions and chal lenges of daily life. Played with trusted friends, it’s also a way to share in and support each other’s changes. Says Joy, “We hope it helps demysti fy the change process, which is spir itual and also very down-to-earth and practical.” The Game has lasting ap peal, since each time around varies with the current Focus and co-players. This, viewers at home, is an un solicited testimonial: I am an ordinary Eugenean, just like yourselves. I find the Transformation Game extraordin arily rewarding. If you’re looking for an insightful, delightful time, and an ongoing source of inspiration and guidance, you may want to give it a try. Everything shown here included. No batteries needed. Just add YOU— and it’s fun, too. [The Transformation Game is $55 at Peralandra Books and Records, 1016 Willamette and 790 East 11th in Eugene.] These changes are represented by transits or the positions of the planets now and how they sym bolically interact with the planets’ position at birth. For example, transits of Saturn, planet of struc ture, limitations and maturity, are linked to seven-year cycles com mon to everyone’s experience. Thorough coverage of transits and how they reflect change on a per sonal level offers readers insight into the meaning of events in their lives. Douglas Bloch and Demetra George are local authors, living in Portland and on the Oregon Coast. Their collaboration on Astrology For Yourself as well as on Asteroid Goddesses, published in 1986, firmly establishes them as impor tant contributors to the field of astrology and its value in the times we live in.
