Their author, Mary Eberdt, a practicing psychologist for several years, gave up her work and came home to Eugene to care for ailing parents. Both parents are now deceased and Mary has developed symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Her search for meaning and for control of symptoms has been extensive, and often unorthodox. It has opened a channel in Mary through which pours a delightful stream of sensitive observations. The foreword to her latest book, Awakening, A Journal of Healing, states: The reader/mates with/the book/ and becomes/ pregnant with the book’s/seed. Each reader/then/brings forth/ a different creation/ from the same/ book. The first entry is dated Thursday, April 10. / can’t die yet!/ I haven't even found out/ who I am! On October 4 she wrote: A saint is/ someone! who is hav ing/ an uninterrupted good time. *** New Year's Eve Have you ever/ noticed/ how the frost/ outlines/ every/ tiny/ thread/ of al spider’s/ web? The Anist who/ does such a! perfect job with/ frost and/ spider's webs/ can surely be/ trusted/ to make of us/ a splendid/ creation. An earlier book, One Therapy, begins with the observation: I feel/ the way I think it might feel/ to have a hangover; but I didn’t have the fun/ of getting drunk first. and goes on to the turning point. I have had ENOUGH/ of the crap py part of myself./ How about tak ing a look/ at what else there is?/ Wty not gather together whatever strengths I have/ challenge life to a wrestling match/ and have some fun at it? Mary’s conversations with God and the devil are shockingly in formal and take most unexpected turns. One night I was talking to God and I said: God, may I ask you a per sonal question? And God said: Hill, I guess so. Sure. So I said: When you were creating all the worlds outside Yourself, Where did You get the idea of sex? And God said: First of all, the worlds aren't outside Myself. All that I created is inside Myself and that's where I got the idea of sex— from Myself. (from Awakening) *** One day the devil/ shook his finger at me./ "I forgive myself/ for all my imperfections,”/ I said./ He turned red and fled. (from Speaking Freely) Mary’s dedicated search has yielded dramatic improvement in control of Parkinson’s disease symptoms. Her words reflect the trauma of the struggle as well as joyous affirmations. It feels like a silken robe with the colors of stained glass floating on my skin. It tastes like warm milk/ from the breasts of the Mother Goddess. . . It sounds like laughter/ coming from under the covers/ where God is suspected of/ making love to my soul. (from From The Silence) *** / am healed/ when every cell in my body/ is/ smiling. (from Awakening) In the book From The Silence Mary says: . . . I feel like a beach house/ where poems come to dress/ after swimming around/ naked/ in the cosmic sea. They need to don a costume/ because/ without being clothed/ in words/ they can’t be seen! by people on land. A brief review can include only a smidgin’ of the charming, rib tickling, soul-grabbing poems Mary has clothed in words for her readers. I highly recommend that you explore them further. The five books: Winds that Winted to be Witten, 1985; Speak ing Freely, 1985; From the Silence, 1986; One Therapy, 1986; and Awakening, 1987, all in paperback, are available from Mandira Publications, 1451 Washington St., Eugene, OR 97401.
