Unique maps for cyclists, hikers Review by Karen Irmsher .SPENCER • BUTTE Touring Eugene Written by Peter Powers, Terra graphics, Eugene, Oregon. Cycling, running, walking and computer art. Though it may seem like an unlikely mix, the four form a unique and mutually beneficial alliance in the book Touring Eugene. Written by Eugene car tographer and cyclist Peter Powers, the book was published this sum mer by Terragraphics, Powers’ own publishing company. Fifteen fold-out route maps com prise the heart of the book. What makes these maps particularly remarkable is their computer generated 3-D perspective. Even confirmed armchair athletes, who believe turning pages provides am ple exercise, will End this aspect of the book intriguing. But Touring Eugene is specifical ly targeted at people who live in the Eugene/Springfield area and enjoy moving around on their own power—cyclers, runners and walkers. A quick glance at a 3-D map, and the route profile printed just below it on each fold-out, lets the reader see exactly how challenging a proposed route will be. Some people may find it discon certing that the top of each map is not necessarily north. However, a small compass on every map shows where north is for that map. On the 3-D maps, in some cases the names of roads are a little dif ficult to read when they are printed in areas which are shaded to emphasize hilly terrain. Powers dealt with this problem by also in cluding a regular flat map of the area right next to the terrain map. So each fold-out actually in cludes two maps. It also includes a mileage log which tells where to start a route, and where to make each turn; descriptions of areas the route traverses; and calorie counters which estimate the number of calories cyclers and runners will expend at various paces. The 15 routes cover a wide variety of terrains and distances, 3-D fold-out map of the Spencer’s Butte tour. from the three short (5-7 miles) flat riverbank loops, to the long (56 mile) and hilly Cottage Grove loop. And there’s something for everyone in between. Some, like the riverbank trails, will already be familiar to most locals, but others, like the Wolf Creek loop, may suggest fresh scenery for exploration. The book’s size is well suited to its purpose? At 3%" by 6%", it’s narrow enough to stuff into a pocket, or hold in the palm of your hand for easy reference while your wheels or feet continue to put the miles behind. Its cover, black and white with a dash of red, is graphically pleas ing. Pages are printed on slick paper. Each fold-out is printed in black ink, with the addition of one other color used to make the route stand out from the rest of the map. Unfortunately, the varying colors—four each of mist blue, aqua, lavender, and heather—while well coordinated with each other, clash with the cover. Explanatory pages at the front of the book clearly outline the con tents, making the booklet easy to use. Runners and walkers may be dis appointed to find that the short sections at the back of the book are directed only to cyclists. Several pages offer information on rules, equipment and clothing for mountain bike trail riding. Others outline the relative difficulty of specific mountain trails. Another short section provides safety tips for cyclists, along with suggestions for maintenance and equipment. Several pages are more general. One shows bar graphs of the area’s temperature, rainfall, sunshine and wind throughout the year. Another lists cycling, running, triathlon, and track and field events, noting the months in which they usually take place. Local cyclers, runners and walkers will no doubt find the book useful for discovering new training routes. Cyclers can also use the maps to choose recrea tional rides that fit their time and energy level. And most everyone else will just get a kick out of checking out 3-D maps of the area.
