On May 8, 1987, Rebeckah was on her way to Cougar Hot Springs to give birth in a natural setting, among the singing birds and whispering trees. However, labor began enroute. The van, pulled over a few miles from the springs, wouldn't restart, and Rebeckah, without any assistance whatsoever, with singular courage reminis cent of women of yesteryear, gave birth to a beautiful, healthy boy, who was named Shiviah (“Pillar of Fire”) Soloman. How ever, paramedics from Springfield had been called by passers-by, and they arrived shortly after birth, finding a baby suckling at mother's breast in blissful life, mother in a state of ecstasy. “Can I take a look at your baby?” “Go away, I don't want you here, I have it all 61000 000600 South Hills Crystal Shop We're having a Christmas Sale 10% off on anything in the store $1 off with this ad. Leave me alone; you're invading my space.” Paramedics needed to interfere; to cut the cord. They called in Sheriff Deputies for assistance. “If you touch me, I’ll sue.” The Deputy Sheriff who arrives takes one look into the van and knows what to do: "Take the baby away and place the mother in custody.” They take Rebeckah by each arm and leg, smashing her hard in the chest; she’s struggling back, biting, threat ening to sue. They place her in soft restraints and transport both her and baby Shiviah to Sacred Heart hospital, Shiviah not having begun to cry until ripped from the breast of his mother. Enroute to Sacred Heart, mother calms down, paramedic releases one of her arms from the restraint, and again mother is permitted to breastfeed. At Sacred Heart, Rebeckah is upset, threatening to sue everyone. Shiviah is ex amined, determined to be perfectly healthy, ' and released to Children Services Divi sion. Rebeckah is placed in the Johnson Unit security room upon a two physicians' hold (after all, she is threatening to sue), but after five days in this isolation, not see ing her newborn, the commitment team member determines she neither poses a threat to herself nor others, and that she is able to take care of herself, etc. In short, she was noncomittable. Closed Christmas Day) KEYSTONE CAFE ACTING LOCALLY SINCE 1979 Does Rebeckah get her child back? No, it is locked in the clutches of CSD. Shiviah is now over 6 months old; Rebeckah has been allowed to spend a total of 37 hours with him, usually in a small CSD room (although currently one hour each week at her apartment), with CSD workers pre sent, one or two taking notes on everything she does. Breastfeed? Forget it, Shiviah never learned how, and now he bites the breast with his two baby teeth. What would the La Leche League say about this? Rebeckah is counterculture, she doesn’t want Shiviah wrapped in plastic (diox ified), but has specially ordered and re ceived cloth diapers; the CSD worker did not know such existed until Rebeckah told her. Rebeckah is into music, art. She doesn’t dress like the culture, she wears velvet dresses and clothes made out of natural materials. She doesn’t eat meat, and tries to eat only chemically free foods if possible. She is a woman of peace, and gentleness. Yet, she is not allowed to live with her love child. She is a devotee of the Grateful Dead. She doesn’t fit into main stream society. How do I know all this? I am Rebeck ah’s lawyer, friend and fellow human be ing, and I can attest to the feet from hav ing spent countless hours with Rebeckah that she is delightful, brilliant, talented, stubborn beyond belief, and beyond any doubt one of the most special people I shall ever encounter. Presently, we are embattled with CSD, and in particular, one CSD worker, a former Springfield police officer and then a long time CSD protective ser vice worker, but who is now into perma nent planning, looking at terminating Rebeckah’s rights as a mother. She is still a cop. She has even on at least one occa sion purposely attempted to deceive the Court. She has not helped at all; it has only been Rebeckah’s friends, many of whom have assisted but who are also members of the counterculture, who have been there for her, giving support, comfort, but on ly to the extent CSD would allow them. CSD doesn’t have the resources to help the mother and child reunion; so Rebeckah must sink or swim. And Rebeckah, whose tears have turn ed to anger, has been spiritually murdered by CSD, after having been so by Spring field Paramedics and Sheriff Deputies. She is living a Kafkian nightmare and I must share it with her as the legal system is too slow, blind, and dominated by mainstream thought. (At a recent hearing, I attempted to call as witnesses three CSD workers to contradict what the primary CSD worker was claiming. Even before I was able to say a single word, the Judge said he would not allow witnesses to testify. The primary CSD caseworker feared what these others had to say.) How can you help? I don’t know. But un til this community stands up for Rebeck ah and demands an accounting of what is presently occurring, the mother spirit of this earth silently weeps. And all the atrocities elsewhere on this uncivilized planet pale in comparison as, if the mother/child bond is not allowed to be, then humanity has no furore. —Michael D.
