Rinpoche Continued from cover Chagdud Rinpoche has often taught on world peace and his message is important for all of us to understand. “It is my wish,” he has said, “that the spiritual power of peace will touch the mind of every person on this earth, radiating out from a deep peace with in our own minds, across political and religious barriers of ego and con ceptual righteousness. Our first work as peacemakers is to clear our minds of mental conflicts caused by ignor ance, anger, grasping, jealousy and pride. “The inner peace we seek should be so absolutely pure, so stable, that it cannot be moved to anger by those who live and profit by war, or to self grasping and fear by confrontation with contempt, hatred and death. In credible patience is necessary to ac complish any aspect of world peace, and the source of such patience is the space of inner peace from which you recognize with great clarity that war and suffering are the outer reflections of the mind's inner poisons. “If you truly understand that the es sential difference in peacemakers and warmakers is that peacemakers have discipline and control over egotistical anger, grasping, jealousy and pride, while warmakers, in their ignorance, manifest the results of these poisons in the world—if you truly understand this you will never allow yourself to be defeated from within or without. “As you meet the powerful, world ly men who sit at the top of the war machines, regard them with strict equanimity. Convince them as effec tively as you know how, but be con stnatly aware of your own state of mind. If you begin to experience anger, retreat. If you can go on with out anger, perhaps you will penetrate the terrible delusion that causes war with all its hellish sufferings. “From the clear space of your own inner peace, your compassion must expand to include all who are involved in war—the soldiers caught in the cruel karma of killing, and who sacri fice their precious human rebirth; the generals and politicians who intend to benefit and cause disruption and death instead; the civilians who are wound ed, killed and turned into refugees. True compassion is utterly neutral and is moved by suffering of every sort, not tied to right and wrong, attach ment and aversion. “The work of peace is a spiritual path in itself, a means to develop per fect qualities of mind and to test these qualities against urgent necessity, ex treme suffering and death. Do not be afraid to give your time, energy and wealth.” Chagdud Rinpoche will be giving two public talks in Eugene in the near future. On Tuesday evening, Decem ber 15, at 7:30 pm, he will present a talk with slides entitled “Return to Tibet,” at the Unitarian Church, 477 E. 40th Ave., Eugene. This past sum mer, after 28 years, Rinpoche return ed to Tibet and spent two months at his monastery, which fortunately has survived the destruction which rav aged Tibet. He was greeted by hun dreds of people and had the oppor tunity to renew old friendships and visit with relatives. During his talk, Rinpoche will speak about the lives of the people of Eastern Tibet during the last 30 years, how they have sur vived under Chinese rule, how their lives have changed, and how their religion and culture have been affect ed. A donation of $7 is suggested. On Tuesday evening, January 5, at 7:30 pm, Rinpoche will speak on “Daily Life as a Spiritual Path.” The talk will also be held at the Unitarian Church, and the suggested donation is again $7. As the time of year rolls around for making new resolutions, it would be good to consider how we can bring our spiritual and worldly dimensions into greater harmony. Not only would it benefit us as indi viduals, but it would bring us one step closer to bringing about world peace. We are fortunate to have Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche among us to provide insights and guidance on how we can bridge these two dimensions of our being.
