Rafting for
River Protection
Wild Oregon Ventures is kicking off
its first season of rafting trips on the
Deschutes, McKenzie and Rogue
Rivers this summer.
Wild Oregon Ventures is an educa
tional and recreational program of the
Oregon Natural Resources Council
(ONRC), a statewide conservation as
sociation. Its purpose is to provide
oportunities for individuals to enjoy
some of Oregon’s most treasured and
often threatened wild places. Proceeds
from the trips help fund ONRC’s con
servation and education programs

Deschutes River,
July 18, August 1, 15 and 29
The Deschutes River is Oregon’s
most popular rafting river for good
reasons. Its crystal clear water holds
numerous exciting rapids as it flows
from the Cascades to the Columbia.
Boxcar, Oak Springs, Elevator, Os
borne, and other rapids challenge
paddling skills. This one day trip puts
in at Wapanitia Rapids and careens
through non-stop whitewater to
Shear’s Falls.
The Deschutes is renowned as east
ern Oregon’s most productive salmon
and steelhead stream. Unfortunately,
a number of dams are still proposed
for this river, and ONRC and other
conservation organizations are work
ing to protect the Deschutes in both
state and federal river systems. Pro
ceeds from these trips will help fund
the Oregon Rivers Campaign.
Trip participants bring their own
lunch and beverages (coolers pro
vided) and meet at Maupin. From
there a shuttle will be coordinated.
The 14-mile trip lasts four hours. Ad
vance registration is required. The
cost is $45 per person.
McKenzie River,
July 11 and 25, August 8 and 22
The McKenzie River, fed year
round by icy springs in the high Cas
cades, drops westward to the Willa
mette River near Eugene. It’s famous
for excellent rafting and fishing
opportunities, and for the outstanding
scenery of the canyon through which
it flows. The trip begins at Finn Rock
and ends below Martin’s Rapids, at
Thompson’s Landing. The McKenzie
is perfect for paddling, as rapids are
nearly continuous through stretches of
the river.
The McKenzie is one of Oregon’s
most cherished streams, but one of its
major tributaries, the South Fork
McKenzie, is threatened by another
dam proposal. ONRC and others are
working to designate the McKenzie
River as Wild and Scenic, in order to
preclude dam threats. Proceeds from
these trips will help fund the Oregon
Rivers Campaign.

Rogue River, Labor Day
Weekend, September 5-8
The Rogue River’s whitewater,
wildlife, scenery and historic
character make it one of the most
popular rivers in the country. Deer,
bear, otters, eagles, hawks, osprey,
and steelhead and salmon are fre
quently spotted. Days on the river will
leave time for hikes up side canyons
into the Wild Rogue Wilderness Area.
Warm waters make for great swim
ming in calm stretches, and fishing
possibilities are endless.
While the Rogue River enjoys fed
eral protection as part of the National
Wild and Scenic Rivers System, areas
adjacent to the Rogue which are not
included in the Wild Rogue Wilder
ness Area are threatened by proposed
logging and roadbuilding. To ensure
sensitive management of these lands
and areas south of the Rogue, ONRC
and others have proposed a 700,000
acre Siskiyou National Park. The
mighty Rogue River would roughly
comprise the northern boundary of
the new National Park.
An ONRC representative will ac
company trip participants to provide
background on the Siskiyou National
Park proposal and the campaign to
protect southern Oregon’s last vestiges
of wild lands and waters. Proceeds
from the trip will help fund the
Siskiyou National Park Campaign.
Participants meet at Alameda Bar
off Highway 30. All meals and the
return shuttle are provided. Advance
registration is required. The cost is
$325 per person.
