1987 Lane Literary Awards
Literary Awards, sponsored by
me Regional Arts Council and
The First Annual Lane
Lane Literary Guild, Lane Regional Arts Council and
What's Happening, is now accepting previously unpub
lished short fiction and poetry from writers residing in
Lane County.
Works by selected writers will be included in Pacifica, a
special literary supplement, to be published in the
September 17 issue of What’s Happening.
The two award winners in each category will be invited
to read as part of Lane LiteraryGuild's Eugene Celebra
tion Reading, at the Hult Conter on September 27.
Each award winner, will also receiye.$50.
Jurors for the Awards will be the featured guest readers
at the Eugene Celebration-Reading. They will be named
next week. **
• Writers muettresice in Lane County, Oregon.
• Writers may submit either poetry or fiction, but not
both. . * 1 ,
• All submissions must be typed fiction (double-spaced)
not to exceed 1500 words; poetry not to exceed 5

poems or 300 lines.
• Two copies of each work are required, without the
author's name on them.
• One separate cover sheet should list the writer's name,
address, and title of each work submitted.
• Work samples will not be returned.
• A $3 reader's fee for each writer must accompany the
submission. Make checks payable to Lane Literary
Guild.
• Entries should be mailed to: Lane Literary Awards,
Lane Regional Arts Council, 411 High St., Eugene, OR
97401.
• Deadline for receipt of entries: 4 pm, July 9, 1987.
• Entrants will be notified by mail of the jurors' decision
by August 15.

David Joyce
exhibits in
New York City

There she sits, looking terribly
bored. Her suitcase is packed, and
she’s just bought the fashion magazine
she wants to read on the bus. All she
has to do now is wait.
“Excuse me, ma’am. Can you tell
me when the bus leaves? Ma’am?
Ma’am? Hello?”
Forget trying to get an answer out
of her. She’s not real. Not real? Yeah,
that’s right. Not real.
“Sitting Woman” is one of 15 life
size photographic sculptures with
found objects, created by Eugene
based artist and full-time LCC in
structor David Joyce, that are in a one
person show at the Marcuse Pfeifer
Gallery in New York City through
June 26.
Joyce creates his photographic
sculptures using “the interplay be
tween life-size photographic cut-outs
and real objects in three-dimensional
space,” he says.
“This allows me to bring the
separate disciplines and concerns of
photography and sculpture together
into a hybrid medium which has many
creative possibilities," Joyce says.
Joyce has shown his photo-sculp
tures all over the country. He was
granted an Oregon Artist’s Fellowship
by the Oregon Arts Commission for
1986-87, and his work has been com
missioned by both Oregon and Wash
ington, and the city of Seattle.
Joyce got the showing in New York
after sending query letters to 65
galleries. When he received eight
positive responses, Joyce went to the
“Big Apple” to begin what he thought
was “a process that would take years”
to get his photo-sculptures accepted
into a gallery.
But to his surprise, the first—and
best—gallery he went to scheduled a
show of his work.
So, on May 15, Joyce packed up all
15 photo cut-outs into plastic bags that

looked like “body bags,” and shipped
them by Greyhound inside bicycle
boxes to New York.
After a week of traveling across
country, the bicycle boxes were
delivered to the gallery, where Joyce
was waiting to set up the show.
Only the photo cut-outs traveled to
the show. After receiving the bike
boxes, Joyce hunted around New York
City to find the “found objects” for
the exhibit. “In that sense, they (the
photo-sculptures) change all the time,
depending on where the show is,” he
says.
While Joyce was in New York, he
spent his spare time shooting pictures.
He says that it is easier to take can
did shots of people in a larger city
than in a town the size of Eugene.
Over the years, Joyce has taken
thousands of images for use in his
photo-sculptures. “I let them per
colate, and periodically look through
them and mix and match the nega
tives,” he says.
Not all of Joyce’s life-size photos
are on display in New York. Some are

waiting to go to Newport Beach,
Calif., where Joyce will show them
at the Susan Spiritus Gallery, begin
ning June 26.
Even when the photo sculptures are
at home in Eugene, Joyce does not
like to set them up around his house.
“They feel too much like people.
They can be startling,” he says.
I know what he means. I still don't
know when that bus is leaving—but
I’m not going to ask that lady again,
that’s for sure.
