The Secret Wars
of the CIA
by Chris Orsinger ...
What knowledge did CIA Director
William Casey take to the grave? The
Iran-Contra investigators lack that in
formation. But you can get an idea
from John Stockwell, a former high
CIA official who will speak Wednes
day, May 27 at 150 Geology, U of O
campus.
Stockwell provides timely insight
into the current Iran-Contra hearings
which focus on the CIA role in pro
viding arms to the Nicaraguan con
tras in direct violation of the law. Like
Colonel Oliver North, Stockwell
worked with the National Security
Council while directing similar covert
actions in Angola. He labels the
diversion of funds "the current
euphemism for grand larceny.” Laws
were “obviously broken and funds
were stolen," Stockwell claims in the
Los Angeles Times (2/23/87).
In a New York Times editorial
(12/14/86), he urges North to “stop lis
tening to attorneys and politicians and
tell the truth before Congress.” Stock
well did the same before the Senate
Intelligence Committee in 1977 when
grilled about his involvement in the
Angola covert operation.
Stockwell joined the Central Intelli
gence Agency in 1964, serving as CIA
station chief in Africa, commander of
the CIA Angola Task Force (which
had a mission similar to the CIA in
Nicaragua), and officer in charge of
Tay Nihn Province in Vietnam. For
his actions, he received the CIA’s Me
dal of Merit.
Now he is the CIA’s most outspoken
critic. “The CIA poses the ultimate
threat to democracy and is a major
cause of the world’s move toward nuc
lear extinction,” asserts Stockwell.
“For the good of the U.S. and the
world, the CIA should be dis
mantled.”
Mr. Stockwell’s lecture entitled
“The Secret Wars of the CIA” de
scribes how the CIA actually seeks to
increase global tension by supporting
military dictatorships and “picking
fights" in the Third World. Choosing
details from his own CIA career, he
accuses the CIA of lying to Congress,
manipulating the media, and cor
rupting foreign officials. The grow
ing list of CIA “dirty tricks”
prompted Stockwell to quit in 1977 af
ter 13 years with the agency.
Why is the United States pouring
arms and money into El Salvador?
Why do we support the documented
human rights abuses of the Nicara
guan contras? Why do we prop up
military dictatorships from Asia to
South America? John Stockwell ad
dresses these questions from the per
spective of a man who cared deeply
enough to fight for his country and
deeply enough to speak out against its
mistakes.
The event is sponsored by the
Council for Human Rights in Latin
America, What‘s Happening, Witness
for Peace, and various other organi
zations. Admission is $2 students, $3
gen’l. admission. For more informa
tion, 484-5867.
John Stockwell is the highest ranked C.I.A. official to openly
criticize the agency. When he accuses the C.I.A. of lying to
Congress, manipulating the media and corrupting foreign
leaders, he knows what he is talking about because he
participated in such operations.
