Skinner City Cloggers join
Country Dance for S.O.S.

The Skinner City doggers will be
special guest performers at a benefit
country dance for Save Our ecoSys
tems, inc. (SOS) this Saturday, Feb.
21. The Cloggers are well known for
their high-spirited, energetic dancing;
your toes will start a’ tappin’ as their
feet hammer out a lively rhythm.
Besides the performance, plenty of
high-steppin' dance tunes will be pro
vided by Chico Schwall on mandolin,
Sam Jones on piano, Jerry Berger on
fiddle, Spence Hollinger on guitar.
Ambo on banjo, Deborah Moskowitz
on hammer dulcimer, Mark Dan
ielson on concertina, and Jan Reed on
bodhran.
Callers Rich Fobes and Diane Son
tag will guide your feet with ease
through circle, square and contra
(line) dances. Each dance will be pa
tiently taught; you need no previous
experience. No partner is necessary,
and all ages are welcome.
Dance basics will be taught at 8
pm, and dancing begins at 8:30 pm
at Kelly Middle School, 850 Howard
Avenue (off River Road). To protect
the gymnasium floor, no street shoes,
please. Delicious refreshments will be
available. Admission is $4, and pro
ceeds will benefit SOS’s educational
project for local wetlands protec
tion.
SOS is a local non-profit or
ganization dedicated to creating an in
creased knowledge and concern about
preserving the ecosystems which sus
tain us. One of the most important
ecosystems in the world is wetlands,
which includes swamps, marshes,
bogs, and other wet environments.
Only recently have we begun to
recognize wetlands as both essential
and endangered.
Wetlands are sites that have shallow
water or saturated soil, accumulate
plant organic materials that decom
pose slowly, and support a variety of
plants and animals adapted to the wet
conditions. Wetlands are transitional
zones where land and water interface;
they are extremely diverse and pro
ductive ecosystems.
Wetlands serve many significant
ecological functions. A wide variety
of wildlife species depend on wetlands
for feeding, nesting and breeding
habitats. About one third of all plants
and animals on the federal endangered
or threatened species lists depend on
wetlands for survival. Wetlands also
function to control erosion and sedi
ment and to store floodwaters.
With the growth of urban areas,
wetlands have become increasingly
important for their capacity to im
prove water quality and protect water
supply. They provide unique educa
tional and recreational opportunities
and are aesthetically pleasing.
These precious ecosystems are dis
appearing at an alarming rate of
400,000 to 600,000 acres per year.
Over half of the original wetlands in
the United States have been lost. As
we drain, ditch, and fill wetlands we
threaten both wildlife and water.
Locally, we contribute to the global
and national decline of wetlands,
because neither the city of Eugene nor
Lane County has established a com
prehensive management program.
Local wetland areas are being rapid
ly threatened and destroyed by inade
quate protection. SOS has been work
ing with local government to en
courage protection of areas such as
the Bertelson Slough and Valley River
Wetlands.
