Workshop
On January 19 Linda Whiteman
will be beginning her two-week
workshop on low-fire ceramics, of
fered on Monday and Wednesday
evenings at Maude Kerns Art Center.
“I like to help students discover their
own path and learn to trust their own
intuition and vision—and at the same
time share my own experience and in
sights,” Linda says of her teaching
style.
Her low-fire workshop will explore
the combination of innovative sculp
tural and pottery making ideas with
a painterly surface treatment. She will
introduce the use of the airbrush,
underglazes, and low-fire clay and
glazes.
Linda first became interested in the
sculptural possibilities of clay in 1965
when she spent a year in Mexico stu
dying pre-Columbian art. Since that
time she graduated with a B.A. in
Drawing from Colorado State Univer
sity, became a production potter in
Boulder, and then studied at several
prestigious colleges in the San Fran
cisco Bay Area. Last year she was the
visiting artist at the University of
Oregon, selected after a national
search.
In the past her ceramic work ex
plored expressionist figurative sculp
tural shapes. Since then she has been
moving in to realism with her paint
ings, drawings and clay work. This
last year at the University of Oregon
she made things like realistic looking
ceramic vegetables as well as collage
like pastel paintings. Now she is start
ing to make thrown Greek urns and

Linda has studied with several of
the foremost innovators in modern
ceramics such as Richard Shaw (at the
San Francisco Art Institute), Peter
Voulkos (at the University of Califor
nia at Berkeley), and Viola Frey (at
the California College of Arts and
Crafts).
Of her own work she says that
whatever she does—whether it is
drawing or painting or clay work—
“that it is about myself and the world
I live in; it comes from my own ex
perience.” Linda has had shows in
California, Oregon, Washington and
Colorado. She is currently affiliated
with the Davidson Gallery in Seattle.
