All the Way to Leh

The bus trip itself is a rite of
passage. The two day ride starts
out in the beautiful and lush Vale
of Kashmir —a deep green valley
lying in the shadow of the magni
ficent Himalayan Range. From the
very beginning one starts to as
cend. Our destination is truly the
top of the world, sharing the
same great mountain plateaux as
Tibet.
Who knows if this road would
have even been built if the Chi
nese had not marched into Eastern
Ladakh in 1962. Immediately In
dia registered its political respon
sibility for this province by the
building of this Beacon Highway.
This area is still of great strategic
importance and is currently being
claimed by China, Pakistan and
India alike. The road, only travel
able a few months of the year,
leads over perilous serpentine
curves that make it one of the
most terrifying yet awe-inspiring
passageways in the world. It
winds through ring after ring of
mountains whose rock faces have
been worked by the elements into
shapes so fantastic that, though
absent of any vegetation at all,
they seem to bloom themselves.
This region is a desert, getting
less rainfall than the Sahara, but is
brought to life by the many shapes
and colors its environment has
etched across its vastly silent ter
rain.
After climbing through a series
of passes, the highest reaching
almost three miles above sea level
(4,200 meters), we slowly creep
our way down into the Indus
River Valley from which springs
the town of Leh. The word Leh
means "oasis" in Ladahki, and that
is exactly what it is: a green fertile
region irrigated by a series of
canals drawing water from a melt
ing glacier far overhead. The land
scape that surrounds it is almost
completely barren.
What's most striking here is
how a culture buried deep within
such an isolated, harsh environ
ment has managed to survive,
much less flourish, as the Ladah
kis have. The answer is soon
found in the people themselves —
not so much as individuals but
how they function as a living part
of the whole community. A ques
tionnaire was once distributed
among them and they were asked,
"Is pride a good thing?" They
without fail answered, 'No."
This outlook can be traced to
the intense devotion they have in
their faith, Tantric Buddhism. It
provides the backbone of all life
for them and has been maintained
in its most pristine form here, as
are most aspects of these peoples'
traditional way of life. For exam
ple, land is never divided but pass
ed down directly from one family
to another. When the eldest son is
married, his parents step back and
move to a small family cottage;
the younger brothers either join
the monastery or remain at home
to share their eldest brother's wife.
This has provided a highly
successful birth control method as
well as kept the Ladahki land and
population intact for centuries.
Despite the hardships and
dangers they face as a way of life,
their demeanor is almost inevit
ably one of cheerful acceptance.
Time after time they impressed me
with their light but penetrating
aura of joy—all set to a backdrop
of constant activity. From this
barren, rocky landscape has
sprung a wealth of art and archi
tecture, a strong political system,
ecological stability and a religion
that takes God out of the heavens
and gives Him back to each per
son to find for himself.
All over Ladakh along the trails
are stones with the sacred letters
"Om Mani Padme Hum" carved
on them and prayer flags, ragged
but enduring, silently sending
their reverence across the land.
Everywhere there are stupas (tem
ples) of all shapes and sizes il
luminated in this moonland, as is
everything. For there is an intense
clarity in this land that makes
things more easily seen for what
they are. Perhaps this is what we
call wisdom.
