Oregon Jazz Festival
Billed as a fund-raiser to benefit
University of Oregon scholarship
funds, the first Oregon Jazz Fes
tival will feature national record
ing artists Dan Siegel (keyboard
ist) and his new band, "76," and
Bobby Hutcherson (viabraphone)
on Sunday, Aug. 24 at the Cuth
bert Amphitheater in Alton Baker
Park. Additional jazz artists
featured at the Eugene event in
clude Deborah Lee and Dick
Blake, Our Thing Quartet with
Andre St. James, and the Eugene
Jazz Orchestra with Greg Hall.
Siegel, a Eugene native, has
long been acknowledged as a pio
neer in this country's progressive
jazz movement. His rapid rise to
fame since 1980 included releasing
critically acclaimed jazz
seven
albums and an eighth, titled Short
Stories, just out.
Hutcherson will be coming to
the Oregon Jazz Festival the day
after giving a concert in Wash
ington, DC. He's recorded over 20
records with such musical greats
as Andrew Hill, Eric Colthy and
Barnford Marsalis.
The Our Thing Quartet features
Ronnie Stien on drums, Bill Beach
on piano and Andre St. James on
bass. St. James has played in the
San Francisco area with the Ed
Kelly Trio and Smiley Winners.
The Oregon Jazz Festival is
sponsored by the Lane County
Chapter of the University of Ore
gon Alumni Association, Smith &
Reilly beer as well as Premier Dis
tributors.
Advance tickets may be pur
chased for $7 at the Hult Center
ticket office or by phoning (503)
687-5000 for a list of additional
outlets thorughout Oregon.
Tickets are $8 the day of the
event. Children under 12 will be
admitted free. Beverages and deli
type foods will be available at the
Festival site.
