El Salvador:
Eyewitness
Report
Humanitarian America is mak
ing its own foreign policy. In con
trast to the bombing and destruc
tion financed by the U.S. Govern
ment in El Salvador, the money
contributed to New El Salvador
Today (NEST) is used for "de
velopment of the basic resources
necessary for life: agriculture pro
duction, child and adult educa
tion, and community health care."
Based in Berkeley, California,
NEST, a tax-deductible founda
tion, has sent over $80,000 to
various projects in El Salvador.
The funds are sent directly to the
people who use it through com
munity based projects run by
those determining their own
course for development.
Diane Green is the West Coast
Regional Director of NEST. She re
turned in March from a fact-find
ing tour of El. Salvador's zones of
popular control. She will talk
about her experience on Thurs
day, June 13 at 7:30 pm in the
EMU Forum Room, UO Campus.
Her talk is entitled Under the
Bombs in El Salvador. She per
sonally experienced a bombing at
tack while there.
Childcare during the event is
possible by calling 485-1755 (CIS
CAP). Donations will be
cepted.

Weekly
Eye Opener
by Larry Deckman
(Taken from Isaac Asimov's
Book of Facts): "Town laws in
the U.S. Midwest in the 1880‘s
were passed prohibiting the
sale of ice-cream sodas on Sun
day. In Illinois, ingenious soda
fountain owners got around
the law by omitting carbonated
water and serving just the
scoop of ice cream and the
syrup. They called this a 'Sun
day soda.' Later that name was
shortened to 'Sunday,' and
then it became 'sundae'."
