Husker Du, a prolific Minnesota rock band, is famous for incredibly fast and
furious guitars and vocals as well as a four-star review in Rolling Stone magazine
for their sixth album, Zen Arcade. They will appear at the UO/EMU Dining
Room on Friday, Feb. 22, at 9 pm. The Resistance, a high-intensity Eugene band,
will open up the show.
The four-sided album Zen Arcade was released six months ago, prompting the
New York Times to call the IP "arguably the best to have emerged from the
hardcore scene," and entered Creem magazine's Rockpool chart at No. 6.
Husker Du's current tour comes following the release of yet another album.
New Day Rising. Their appearance is being co-promoted by KRVM 91.9. The
band can be heard on the station's Radio 80's, from 10:30 to midnight daily and
from 4 pm to midnight on Sundays. Tickets are available at the EMU Main Desk
and Earth River Records for $4 for U of O students and $5 for the general public.

Album Review:
“Human Voices"
Five years ago the Tree People,
a unique and innovative acoustic
group from Eugene, pressed their
first album. The result of their lat
est efforts, a cassette tape entitled
Human Voices, is now available
at local outlets.
The Tree People consists of
Stephen Cohen, guitarist-singer
songwriter, and Jeff Stier, wind
instruments-percussionist-ar
ranger along with a core of other
talented musicians. Their com
bined efforts create a music which
Stephen Cohen
expands the acoustic sound into
new territory.
Human Voices is made up of
eight original compositions, half
of which are songs, the other half
instrumentals. Cohen is like a
quiet stranger to the world who,
after basking in the rain and
watching the trees for too long by
civilized standards, enters a stuffy
bar to remind the folks that be
yond the confines shines a lumi
nous moon. The songs encourage
the listener to ponder important
realities sadly neglected by most
popular music today. The first
song, Grandfather, focuses on an
awareness of death and suffering
and the subtle condolences of the
wind in the trees. The title
number, Human Voices, is
another appreciative nature piece
with rich vocal harmonies. A song
that will likely open the heart is
Thomas, which is about the rela
tionship of a man and a boy who
has mental problems. Its chord
progression is flowing and melo
dic, augmented.by a sublime in
strumental break.
Cohen's guitar playing through
out is original. His vocals, with
their unusual phrasing and evoca
tive lyrics, are a pleasure. Un
derlying all is the skilled and
creative work of Jeff Stier. His
Jeff Stier
presence adds a refreshing ele
ment, particularly to the more
daring instrumental pieces. Above
all is his finesse on the recorder.
He has taken an instrument from
the Renaissance and made it mod
ern.
Human Voices definitely sur
passes the Tree People’s first
album in quality and depth. Per
haps it will receive the recognition
it deserves.
