Treeshares
A Self-Help Project
Treeshares is a new program de
voted to the planting, tending and
harvesting of fruit and nut trees
and other edible perennials, such
as blueberries and cane fruits, on
► private land. Current the project
includes the Whiteaker, Westside,
and Bethel Triangle neighbor
hoods, but will likely expand in
the future.
Volunteers are now needed to
begin organizing for the January
and February pruning of trees
which will be harvested in the fall.
Fruits of the labor will be distri
buted to the volunteers, the pro
viders of trees, low-income
families and organizations.
Treeshares is sponsored by the
Eugene Community Gardens Pro
gram, The Whiteaker Community
Council, and Lane County VISTA
Project. Several community or
ganizations are joining together to
facilitate this project, including
the Eugene Tool Library and the
County Extension Service, but
most of Treeshares' active
members will come from neigh
borhood residents, their associa
tions, garden clubs, churches and
cooperatives.
The first Treeshares workshop,
which will concern the winter
pruning of dormant trees, will be
held at 1 pm on Sunday, Jan. 20,
at the River House, located at 301
North Adams, Eugene. Potential
members are strongly encouraged
to attend this workshop, or if
unable, to contact the Treeshares
office, also at the River House, by
this date.
For more information, or if you
know of likely trees in your area,
or if you have expertise or other
resources to offer, please call Mol
ly Widmer, Treeshares coor
dinator, at 687-5329. Donations
to Treeshares are tax-deductible.
