"Eugene's Favorite Burger
and Breakfast Stop"
Life has been getting busier for
Ariel Klein and Gregory Field.
Their restaurant, Hamburger
Terry’s, recently swept the ome
lette and hamburger categories of
a city-wide taste contest. 'The
day after," recalls Ariel, "the
restaurant was just swamped.
And it hasn't let up."
The lines now form earlier and
last longer at this intimate hide
away in the Fifth Street Public
Market. Its popularity is an ex
tension of the obvious pride the
owners take in their product.
"I just love our food," says
Gregory. "I could never eat at
Wendy's. It's been etched deeply
in my brain what a good burger
is." Muffins, including the un
common strawberry bran, are
baked fresh every morning. The
burgers, "5 ounces of indecently
delicious, extra lean," are hand
shaped from beef ground fresh
twice weekly.
The menu covers several pages.
Eight varieties of stuffed potatoes
have been recently added to the
seven breakfast specials (from
"Just a Nibble” to "I Can't Believe
I Ate the Whole Thing''); 24 dif
ferent omelettes, including a sur
prise from the chef's imagination;
and 24 uniquely named burgers.
Cold Sandwiches, salads, soups,
juices and Italian sodas complete
the fare. Prices range in the one to
five dollar ballpark.
The two owners have run the
show for three years, since the
original Terry, who also started
the Greek Isle Cafe upstairs, left to
be a counselor in Hawaii. Buying
the business was “sort of a whim,”
says Ariel. "We thought we'd
check it out." "A fluke," agrees
Gregory. "But the more we look
ed, the more feasible it seemed."
They inherited a manger, learn
ed the ropes by the handle of their
frying pan, and it's been uphill
since. Now they're ready for the
next move.
"Starting July 1," says Ariel,
"we'll be open till nine six nights a
week. We're also getting a beer
and wine license. And in mid-July,
we're remodeling with new tables
and floors."
Life, in this compact corner of
culinary creations, should keep
getting busier.
