International
Friendship
International Friendship Fam
ily is a program new to Lane
Community College this year.
The purpose is for international
students to share cross-cultural
experiences with families from
their host country. LCC wants
to provide a comfortable space
for students who are living on
their own to be part of a family
group at times. If you are inter
ested in participating in this pro
gram, contact Mira Grattis,

Sponsors, a non-profit group
that assists ex-prisoners, will be
selling Christmas trees now
through December 24 on the
corner of 7th and Tyler, Monday
through Saturday from 9 a.m. to
7 p.m. Proceeds will be used to
help fund Project Self-Reliance,
an employment service for ex
prisoners. For further informa

WISTEC
Scholarships
A grant of $4400 from the
Fred Meyer Charitable Trust will
enable Willamette Science and
Technology Center (WISTEC)
to offer 60 full-tuition scholar
ships for children from low in
come families during a period of
one year beginning in January
1984. The grant will allow
WISTEC to award incentive
scholarships of $10 toward class
tuition to 150 girls during the
same time period. Full tuition
for the class is $30.
The full-tuition scholarships
and incentive scholarships are
offered to increase the scientific
and technical literacy of elemen
tary and high school students in
Lane County. In the past,
WISTEC’s computer classes
have consistently attracted about
75% boys and 25% girls. The in
centive scholarships are offered
to girls in hopes of balancing the
enrollment of boys and girls in
computer classes.
WISTEC’s computer classes
introduce students to computer
programming. They learn to
write and
run programs in
BASIC, a computer language
common to most types of micro
computers. There are no grades
and no homework; there is plen
ty of individual attention and
opportunity to explore.
Full scholarships are available
on a first-come, first served ba
sis, to anyone eight to eighteen
years of age whose family has a
Food Stamp card. Incentive
scholarships are available to girls
from eight to eighteen, also on a
first-come, first served basis (no
demonstration of financial need

Tales From Here & There
Storyteller and author. Bob
Rubinstein, will offer “Tales
From Here and There,” on Sun
day, December 11 at 4 p.m. This
program will be a benefit for,
and take place at. Temple Beth
Israel, 2250 Portland St., Eu
gene. Featured in this interna
tional afternoon will be stories
from Haiti, China, American
Folklore, an Irish street song
and a Jewish tale or two.
Bob Rubinstein has per
formed his stories across the
country and led a variety of
workshops. He is a teacher at
. Roosevelt Middle School in Eu
gene, and the creator and found
er of the Roosevelt Troupe of
Tellers. These dynamic young
storytellers have performed for
some 2300 school children annu
ally. In 1983, the Roosevelt
Troupe of Tellers received one
of Oregon’s “great kids” Public
Service Awards.

mo, Bob is the author of two
novels for young adults: “Who
and
Wants to be a Hero!
“When Sirens Scream.”
Don’t miss this delightful and
