Lane County Farmers3 Market
Opens June 4th
Eugene was once the site of
one of the most successful and
popular Farmers’ Markets on
the West Coast. The Eugene
Producer’s Public Market open
ed in 1915, and operated success
fully for 14 years at a location on
8th and Park Streets downtown.
Fruits, vegetables, poultry, eggs,
meat, and cider were sold to
eager customers under a cov
ered] open-walled structure. In
1929, after intense competition
by factions of downtown mer
chants wanting the Farmers’
Market to locate near their
stores, the Farmers’ Market
moved to a fancy new building
at the corner of Broadway and
Charnelton Streets. The opening
of the new market was described
as a “mob scene,” and 100 pro
ducers sold their goods. The Po
mona Grange was the owner of
the building, and was responsi
ble for the development and suc
cessful management of the Pub
lic Market. However, by the
1950’s, the pressures of high
land value, supermarkets, and
one-crop farming caused the
Market to close in 1959, as the
building was converted for use
by a national chain drug store.
In July 1979, the Saturday
Market Board of Directors in
dicated its interest in managing
the Farmers’ Market. The Satur
day- Market was a stable organi
zation, nearly 10 years old, with
competent paid staff and experi
ence in managing vendor mar
kets.
The Saturday Market staff
operated the Farmers’ Market as
a distinct, yet complementary
activity to the Saturday Craft
Market held on the adjacent
parking lot. They took care of
advertising, insurance, fee col
lection, maintenance, and gen
eral operation of the market. In
addition, they managed a con
signment booth which sold pro
duce from farmers and backyard
growers at a 10 percent mark-up.
In its fifth year of sponsoring
the Lane County Farmers’ Mar
ket, the Saturday Market has
been busily working with City
and County officials to get the
Farmers’ Market stabilized for
its June 4th opening. Because of
its historical significance to the
area, there is a lot of support for
its continued survival. The pro
duce and products offered at the
Farmers’ Market deserve their
reputation as the -freshest and
finest to be found in the area ...
a source of pride to the vendors
and good fortune for their cus

The Third Annual Oregon State Fair
Film Competition, coordinated by
the Media Project, will be held this
summer, August 26-September 5.
This year, the competition recog
nizes superior work by filmmakers
living in Oregon and Washington.
Entries must have been completed
after January, 1980 and must be
i submitted by 5 pm July 11. For entry

west. One print may be submitted
for both screenings—although there
are separate guidelines for Image
Crossing Northwest.
. Applications are now available for
any youngsters, grades four through
seven, who would like to attend the
4-day 4-H summer camps at Camp
Lane, along with Siuslaw River near
Mapleton. There will be 2 sessions:
June 20-24 for 4th and 5th grades;
and June 27-July 1 for 6th and 7th
grades. The all-inclusive camp fee is
$45 and optional transportaion will
be available for $5. All fees, plus the
application form, are due at the Ex
tension office no later than June 9.

Vacation College, to be held in two
week-long sessions, July 17-23 and
