WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE SKY
This issue inaugurates a new feature in Whats Happening for 1983: What’s
Happening in the Sky. This weekly column will tell Eugene/Springfield residents
what planets and stars they can see in the sky at night and will also present
some interesting celestial tidbits for those who get hunger pangs while traveling
through the galaxy. The column is writen by Larry Deckman, a local inventor
and celestial map maker.
This star map shows the stars visible
above Spencer's Butte at 8 pm each night
from Jan 13-20. This week high in the sky is
Perseus, the Hero, with his arm out
stretched. Down beneath his feet are the
Pleiades, a bright star cluster. Look slightly
farther down and you will find Taurus, the
Bull. Incidentally, to really get the most out
of this star map, use a dim flashlight or one
with a red bulb. That way, you won't blind
yourself to the stars above you.
Just after sunset, you should be able to
see Venus as a bright while light in the
southwest. Slightly to the left of Venus will
be red Mars. While not quite as bright as
Venus, its color should give it away. For
those with early jobs or a taste for sunrise,
Jupiter can be seen as a very bright white
point (much brighter than any star in the
sky) in the southeast before dawn. Saturn
will also be visible in the early twilight
hours, rising at about 2 am each morning
this week. It is a bright yellowish planet
that can be seen above Spencer's Butte at
about 6:30 am. Try to peek at it with a tele
scope; you'll be amazed! As to the Moon,
get set for a beautiful sight on Saturday the
15th at sunset. At that time it should be
visible (weather permitting) just above
Venus.
This week's celestial eye-opener (taken from the book. Other Worlds Than
Ours):
"Small bodies from outer space entering the Earth's atmosphere usually
become incandescent 'shooting-stars,' and by far the greater number are com
pletely converted to the finest ash—'star dust'—which floats down through the
skies to the almost incredible extent of some 14,000 tons per day."
Glow-in-the-dark maps of the Heavens over Eugene/Springfield are now
locally available. Forget the rain outside as you look above your bed each
night and see the stars shine! The map also makes a "glowing" birthday or holi
day gift. They can be purchased for $7 from Larry Deckman at 2740 Monroe
St. in Eugene. Call 343-7166.
