As Sweet As Honey
Radio listeners get a sweet treat Thursday night, the 23rd, with the
Oregon premiere of Marcia Mint Danab’s audio celebration of the Jewish
holidays Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippor, and Sukkot. KLCC’s “Songs of
Work, Struggle and Change” will debut the 30-minute program; host Will
Doolittle will follow with half an hour of Jewish music. Portland’s KBOO will
air the program as well.
Danab worked for over a year to blend taped interviews she conducted
with persons of Jewish immigrant backgrounds (some from Eugene and
Portland) with Jewish holiday music to create this sound collage.
The Oregon Committee on the Humanities awarded Danab a grant to
produce and distribute the program to National Public Radio stations
throughout the country. NPR will take it from the satellite, for free. By De
cember, Mint hopes to have her next piece, on the holiday Hanukah, ready
for nationwide distribution through NPR. Also, many of the uncut interviews
will comprise an oral history to be stored in the archives at the University of
Oregon and at the Jewish Historical Society in Portland.
Listen Thursday night, September 23, at 7:30 p.m. to KLCC 89.7 FM for
the first part of “Jewish Holidays—As Sweet As Honey.”
