PUTTING PEACE BACK INTO THE WORLD
THE RESPONSIBILITY EXTENDS TO EVERY INDIVIDUAL
W HEN THE bloodsoaked world in the fall of 1918
came reeling out of the trenches, the sobered
nations first began to check up on the losses in
human life they had suffered. The next step was
the tabulation of that which had been destroyed
in physical and moral values. When the uncontaminated
elements of every people realized to what extent the
human virtues, which had slowly been molded and
erected as monuments to the world’s greatest forward
movement of civilization, had been destroyed during
the ruthless prosecution of the war, a cry of pain rent
the air. To the extent our civilization had been im
paired or discredited, to that extent they discovered
that a recrudescence of the alloy of the primitive man
had taken place. Again they beheld a recurrence of
the primitive animal traits that had held him on a
lower stratum through the long dark ages before the
soul of man was awakened and became the enlighten
ing force we call human conscience. This soul force
has through the ages quickened the finer sensibilities
reflected in the God-image and set in motion the
machinery of man’s emancipation. In due time it
produced the civilization we knew in 1914 before the
world plunged into the cataclysm that produced this
recrudescence.

Through the years that have followed since the
civilized nations in 1914 went into the valleys of the
past, man’s ingenuity has been chiefly directed along
channels of warfare inventions. The development of
weapons of war, instruments so deadly that the in
ventors themselves shudder at the thought of the
possible disaster and devastation they are capable of
producing when iscientifically handled and appllied,
has seemingly become an obsession among the leading
world nations.
The human mind, somehow, seems to have at
tained a different level of reason than the prevailing
level of 1914. This deduction is based upon its favor
able reactions to the ancient creed of combative ability
and ingenuity. The prevailing sentiment, despite all
assertions to the contrary, seems to be to put faith and
reliance on might, rather than on right; and the poison
ous seeds of distrust are actually being cultivated in
the soil which we had come to believe had been dedi
cated to trust and confidence, justice, right and good
will.
The stage has retained its war-setting and “the
next war” is being discussed everywhere as though
its outbreak was impending, something in a sense to
be looked forward to rather than something to be
avoided.
War lords and generals, in line with ancient
practices, have been allowed to occupy the high seats in
the Councils of Peace. Their vindictive spirits have
clashed and rendered almost impossible the hoped
and prayed for return of peace. While these post
war maneuvers have held the world’s attention, the
spiritual morale, all over the world, has been weakened
and a state of moral irresponsibility of far reaching
proportions is discernible on every hand. When the
spiritual morale of a people shows signs of receding
the effect is immediately apparent in moral recklessness
and an alarming abandon of right living on every hand.
Human delinquency always increases when the
moral standards are impaired through periodic lapses
of the spiritual morale of society.
Most noticeable in the scale of moral decadence is
the tendency to outlawry, murder and thievery, im
morality and indifference to the the laws of state and
society. These developments alone have gained such
alarming proportions that all sorts of modern sooth
sayers, prophets and scientists are now engaged in
trying to find the cause for these outcroppings of
bestial traits which normal states of an advanced civili
zation had happily eradicated to an extent that its
signs were so rare that civilized society was thought
