AMERICANIZATION AS A MEANS TO
REDEEM OUR SPIRITUAL PATRIOTISM
HILE the Americanization movement has come to be re
garded as of greater importance to the nation’s well-being'and
security than any other patriotic activity, having for its purpose
the development of a dependable and intelligent citizenship
among the millions of foreign-born people who have made
America their home, public opinion should put its stamp of disap
proval on those who attempt to use the movement for selfish ends.
Intelligent Americans everywhere who are listening with misgivings
to the many novel ideas of Americanization that are being ad
vanced by the untrained proponents of the movement, are finding
encouragement in the knowledge that trained minds of native and
foreign birth have developed definite standards and plans of teach
ing whereby the immigrant is being enabled to cross the divide in
possession of all his native virtues, culturally and spiritually, and
trained to use them for his intellectual, material and spiritual ad
vancement, for the good of himself, his fellowmen and his adopted
country. In this movement there is no room for the self-seeker.
It can only be carried forward by those who have dedicated them
selves to the service of our country, those who have grasped the
importance of intelligently training the mind of the adult immi
grant and bringing him into that closer communion of civic
fellowship upon which depends America’s ability to resist the
secret and sinister borings from within and to combat the alien
isms that have made alarming inroads during recent years.
The soul of the early America characterizes this movement. It
contains that wholesome spirituality which in the beginning was
stamped upon our social and political relations and reflected in our
concern for equal rights and justice. It contains that redeeming
spark of the divine that created this invincible power for human
emancipation which all the world knows by the name—America!
