pOR GOD, for HOME, for COUNTRY. This is the cardinal
4
creed to good citizenship in America. Every church in this
land, whatever the religion of the people who worship before the
altar within, is a contributing link to keep this creed a living force
in the American people. None save the irresponsible, the irrelig-
ious and the atheist would risk the challenge. Wherever the wor-
shipper goes to find solace for a troubled heart and to appease his
spiritual desires—whether it is in the Jewish temple or the syna-
gogue of his fathers, where the Talmud’s teachings and passages
stir the soul and kindle faith ard goodness; or in the Catholic
church, richly decorated with apostolic and sainted dead, where
the worshiper may implore the saints to intercede for him before
the throne of God, while he kisses the crucifix, symbolic of his
faith, or counts the beads of his rosary, over and over again, dur
ing his supplication; or it is in the Lutheran or Episcopal churches
with their modified symbolism in ornamentation, ecclesiastic ves
ture and liturgical service; or in the so-called modern churches,
Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Congregat.ona) or Christian,
with a more prosaic or unimaginative interior and with a simpli
fied service form; or it is in the Salvation Army, Pentecostal and
Apostolic Faith Halls, where pert epigrams in all colors decorate
the walls, and noisy music and spiritual songs, set to popular mel
odies, fill the air amid stirring speeches, amens and hallellujahs—
it matters little where, for out of these Christian Service Stations
come daily, men and women, spiritually blest and ennobled in soul,
better equipped to plod along the trail of life and be friends and
fellows of all men.
America is a better country for ALL her churches, for all her
worshipers, for all those who daily communicate with their Crea
tor and radiate Christian fellowship in home, in office and in shop.
