IM APRIL, 1924 THE UNITED AMERICAN square deal, and his record is proof of his sincerity. His statement of principles contains an appeal to those of our citi zens who are foreign born, for the type of Americanism possessed by this clean cut young candidate is the same type which has been held up to our new citi zens as worthy of example. John A. Mears, republican candidate for district judge, department Number 1, has been engaged in active practice for more than three years, the time fixed by law as a qualification for district judge. In speaking of his candidacy Mears says: “If the deputy district attorney candidates have this qualification, they have been engaged in the practice of law while drawling salary from Multnomah county as deputy district attorneys.” Mr. Mears’ record is a most interesting one. His ancestors arrived in this coun try in the Mayflower. His grandfather fought in the Revolution and his father in the Civil war • His son served all through the World war. He seeks the of fice because he believes ’he can serve the public fairly, justly and impartially. any fiduciary relation, the name of the person or corporation for whom such trustee, is acting, is given; also that said two paragraphs contain statements embracing affiant’s full knowledge and belief, as to the circumstances and con ditions under which stockholders and security holders who do not appear upon the books of the company as trustees, hold stock and securities in a capacity other than that of a bona fide owner; and this affiant has no reason to believe that any other person, association or corporation has any interest, direct or indirect, in the said stock, bonds, or other securities than as so stated by him. At a banquet for teachers a well-fed politician proposed a toast: “Long live the teachers.” A piping little voice rose above the applause: “On what?” The bell in the Cathedral of St. Stephen, Vienna, weighing 39,096 pounds, is made from 180 pieces of cannon taken from the Turks.
