Mathews, Tribune News Service Continued from page 4 the help of current editor, Nicole Vulcan and her team. Incredibly, I9m still getting responses for stories I wrote decades ago that have gone out into the vast worldwide Internet. All these patient car- ing people (and so many more I took the time to lis- ten to) have made me what my grandfather called, <A Success.= During the early part of World War II I9d go with him in his horse drawn wagon from the farm we lived on into the town of West Haven, Connecticut, where we would sell produce and dairy products. One afternoon I hap- pened to come upon him sitting at the kitchen table counting the money we col- lected on that day9s trip. As I approached him he looked up with a bunch of coins in his hand, smiled and said, <By golly, Jimmy I9m a success; I9m doing what I want to do, doin9 it the best I can and get- tin9 paid for it.= And that, dear readers, PHOTO BY SUE ANDERSON Jim Anderson. A success. became my goal in life. But now, although I still have a lot more stories in my head and heart, I9m prepar- ing to leave my home here of many years and with my wife of nearly 50 years, join our son, Caleb, and his fam- ily over in Eugene, where sooner or later, I9ll go out among the stars. So long, dear read- ers, I9ve sure enjoyed our time together. Thanks for all you9ve taught me and I hope we9ll meet again some- where pleasant and relive the wonderful times we9ve shared on this grand old Earth, our home away from Home. — Last Week’s Puzzle Solved — The World9s all right; serene I sit, And joy that I am part of it; And put my trust in Nature9s plan, And try to aid her all I can; Content to pass, if in my place I9ve served the uplift of the Race. Truth! Beauty! Love! O Radiant Day 4 What ho! The World9s all right, I say. 4 Robert Service Trailhead changes for Whychus fish project The Whychus Trailhead off Forest Road 16 south of Sisters will be closed to allow for construction of a project to improve fish passage in the area. The Whychus Trail will remain accessible. The trailhead closure began on September 8 and will end on October 30. The closure is for public safety and to allow heavy equipment to operate safely in the project area. A temporary parking lot and trailhead is located 500 feet southwest of the closed trailhead. A temporary trail has been constructed to pro- vide access to the Whychus Trail. Eastbound hikers will be directed to use the tem- porary trail to the temporary parking lot and asked not to enter the construction area. The Plainview Fish Passage project will create an irrigation diversion fish screen, install a pipeline and remove a dam. The screening is being done to keep redband trout and steelhead from entering an irrigation ditch. The dam removal will allow fish to access habitat in upper Whychus Creek. Plainview ditch is not cur- rently screened and allows redband trout and steelhead to enter the ditch and not return to Whychus Creek. The dam that pushes water into the ditch is an upstream fish migration barrier. A new fish screen will be installed, a pipe will be installed to carry some of the water, and the dam will be removed. Gravel, boulders and logs will be placed in the section of Whychus Creek to stabilize the channel after dam removal. According to the Forest Service, the project sup- ports Chinook salmon and steelhead trout reintroduc- tion into the upper Deschutes Basin. The project also helps to protect native redband trout.
