Rimrock Ranch
preserved by DLT
The Deschutes Land
Trust (DLT) announced last
week that it has purchased
and protected 1,123 acres of
land along Whychus Creek
northeast of Sisters. Rimrock
Ranch includes rugged can-
yons, pine and juniper for-
ests, and almost two miles of
Whychus Creek.
<The owners of Rimrock
Ranch began working with
the Land Trust in 2003 to
conserve this unique prop-
erty,= said founding direc-
tor Brad Chalfant. <From
the outset, our shared long-
term vision for Rimrock
Ranch was that the Land
Trust would one day own
and ensure permanent pro-
tection of its remarkable
natural resources. Thanks
to stalwart donors who sup-
ported our Campaign for
Whychus Creek, an amazing
landowner, and our conserva-
tion partner McKenzie River
Trust, we have now realized
that vision.=
Rimrock Ranch9s grass-
lands, forests, and creek are
home to a wide variety of
species, including reintro-
duced Chinook salmon and
steelhead, mule deer, rocky
mountain elk, golden eagles,
and numerous songbirds. The
diversity of natural features
at the ranch, combined with
the property9s connection to
surrounding undeveloped
lands means it will continue
to provide a refuge in the

Exhibit honors women’s suffrage
By Jodi Schneider
Correspondent
A new quilt exhibit at
Beacham9s Clock Co. is cel-
ebrating a century of wom-
en9s rights.
In the fall of 2019, East
of the Cascades Quilt Guild
(EOCQ), a Sisters-based
quilt guild, was taking theme
ideas and voting on which
one they wanted to do for a
special exhibit in the 2020
Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show
(SOQS). The guild had a
tie between celebrating 100
Years of Women9s Suffrage
and My Kind of Town, the
theme for the 2020 SOQS.
(Five Central Oregon guilds
had a special exhibit of 12
quilts in the 2020 SOQS vir-
tual show on July 11.)
Sisters resident and guild
member Susan Cobb said,
<We opted to do both, and
I was asked to coordinate
the 100 Years of Women9s
Suffrage exhibit.=
The women9s suffrage
movement was a decades-
long fight to win the right
to vote for women in the
United States. (See related
story, page 15.)
She added, <The idea for
this special exhibit began
because we wanted to honor
the centennial anniversary
of the 19th Amendment. In
a planning meeting of the
EOCQ guild, we decided,
due to the importance of
the topic, that we would
open this special exhibit up
to include quilters from the
various guilds in Central
Oregon. We had six guilds

Tree removal blocks
access to Dark Lake
Those who want to visit
Dark Lake over the next
couple of weeks are having
to hike in.
Forest Service Road
2066-600, which provides
access to Dark Lake and
Camp Tamarack, has been
closed while contractors con-
duct tree removal work as
part of the Suttle Lake Veg-
etation Management Project.
The work started on August
10, and the resulting clo-
sure is expected to last for
approximately two weeks.
During the closure, visi-
tors can access Dark Lake by
parking at Scout Lake Day
Use Area and hiking approx-
imately half a mile on the
Two Lakes Trail.
The Suttle Lake Vegeta-
tion Management Project pro-
vides treatment and removal
of dead and dying trees or
trees showing signs of future
failure within organizational
camps, campgrounds, and
along roads in the greater
Suttle Lake area. Contractors
started work in May 2020.
As the COVID-19 crisis continues to affect gatherings, please contact individual organizations for current meeting status
