Dispose
of yard
debris
for free
Central Oregonians are
staying home to help prevent
the spread of COVID-19.
This time at home provides
a unique opportunity to pre-
pare for fire season and take
advantage of free yard debris
recycling events.
Wildfire season is quickly
approaching and Central
Oregon has had a drier than
average winter this year.
Due to the dry winter, Sisters
Country is seeing low fuel
moisture levels and the long
term forecast looks like we
could have an early fire sea-
son in the Pacific Northwest.
This means there is an ele-
vated risk of larger fires, so
Central Oregon fire person-
nel are already gearing up for
a busy fire season.
COVID-19 could create
some increased challenges
to our fire season. Keeping
wildland firefighters healthy
and adhering to social dis-
tancing through this wildland
season may be difficult. The
goal will be to keep wildland
fires small and focus on pre-
vention efforts. This is where
our community can help by
preparing their homes and
creating defensible space to
get it fire ready.
Residents are asked to
wear masks when they drop
off their yard debris and to
keep an appropriate space
between themselves and
other vehicles. Department
of Solid Waste staff will con-
duct FireFree events to allow
for proper physical distanc-
ing between participants.
This year, Deschutes
County will offer expanded
FireFree event dates from
May 9 to May 24 at Knott
Landfill and local transfer
stations, including Sisters:
Northwest Transfer Station;
Wed. through Sat., 8 a.m. to
4 p.m.; 68200 Fryrear Rd.
MOTHER’S DAY:
106-year-old holiday
is not canceled
Continued from page 3
are celebrating the holiday at
home or even away from the
women that you love.
Although some Mother9s
Day traditions such as going
to the spa and fancy dinners
are next-to-impossible this
May, remember, Mother9s
Day isn9t canceled. With
some creativity and prepara-
tion, you can give your mom
or mother of your children the
special day she deserves.
For those of you who
made plans to visit your
mom this weekend 4 a vir-
tual Mother9s Day will do 4
thanks to FaceTime, Skype,
WhatsApp and Zoom, the
video chat can be almost as
good as the real deal. Your
mom would be thrilled if she
sat down in front of her com-
puter on Mother9s Day and
discovered you arranged a
virtual Zoom party with fam-
ily and favorite friends.
Buy her a book on her
favorite subject and shop
locally at Paulina Springs
Bookstore in Sisters.
What about baking with
the kids? It9s a learning activ-
ity and a lot of fun, whether
you9re figuring out how to
make zucchini brownies
work or going for donuts and
cookies.
Small gestures that dem-
onstrate your love and appre-
ciation that are easy to make
such as crafting a Mother9s
One Skillet Chicken Fajitas
2 Tbsp. olive oil, divided
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 medium green bell peppers,
halved, seeded, and cut
into thin strips
1 yellow bell pepper, halved,
seeded, and cut into thin strips
1 red bell pepper, halved, seeded,
and cut into thin strips
3 large shallots, halved lengthwise
and thinly sliced
2 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken
breasts or thighs
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. black pepper
1 Tbsp. chili powder
2 tsp. ground cumin
2 tsp. smoked paprika
6 flour tortillas, warmed
Roasted tomato salsa
Heat one tablespoon oil in a large skillet (cast iron works
best) Add garlic, bell peppers, and shallots. Season with salt
and pepper, and cook stirring often, until vegetables are soft
and lightly charred, 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer vegetables to
a plate and set aside. Do not wipe skillet clean.
Season chicken evenly with the chili powder, cumin and
paprika on both sides. Heat remaining olive oil in skillet over
high heat. Add chicken and cook until browned and a meat
thermometer inserted in the thickest part registers 165º,
about 12 minutes per side for breasts, 8 minutes per side
for thighs. Transfer chicken to cutting board and let rest 5
minutes. Cut chicken crosswise into thin strips. Do not wipe
skillet clean.
Return vegetables to skillet and cook stirring often until
heated through, about 2 minutes. Turn off heat, add chicken
and toss to combine. Serve with warm tortillas and salsa.
Day card. A little celebration
can go a long way.
It9s no secret that the
biggest treat for moms on
Mother9s Day is the chance
to have someone else do
the washing, cleaning, and
cooking.
Surprise your mom or
wife with fresh coffee,
orange juice, and pancakes
with breakfast in bed. This is
an easy solution to keep your
kids engaged and excited,
while cooking up something
delicious for mom.
If the weather9s good, be
sure to get outside and take a
socially distanced walk with
the family, including the dog.
Then pull out all the stops
with a homemade evening
meal that will warm her
heart 4 especially because
she won9t have to do a thing.
Including the dishes.
