Stewardship group plans cleanup
Recreational target-shoot-
ers are gathering on Saturday,
August 24, for a steward-
ship cleanup of the popular
Zimmerman Butte shooting
area about five miles west of
Sisters.
The group, Trash No Land
out of Washington, is orga-
nizing the cleanup with the
support of the U.S. Forest
Service and sponsorship from
a variety of outdoor-oriented
businesses, including Sisters
Meat and Smokehouse and
The Fly Fisher9s Place in
Sisters and Sportsman9s
Warehouse and Trigger
Happy Guns in Bend. Sisters
Les Schwab will recycle any
used tires found on the site.
Event coordinator Bill
Cogley told The Nugget
that the cleanup is receiv-
ing <great community sup-
port 4 we just need the
volunteers. I am really hop-
ing to get as many respon-
sible target-shooters as
possible.=
Cogley said that, in addi-
tion to cleaning up trash and
litter that tends to accumulate
in shooting areas, the event is
geared toward promoting an
ethic of stewardship among
responsible sportsmen.
Zimmerman Butte lies
west of Sisters on Forest
Road 500 off of Highway 20.
There will be a 9 a.m. safety
briefing and discussion about
current recreation activities,
fire prevention measures and
safety in recreation. Several
businesses have donated
prizes for a raffle that will be
held along with a free barbe-
cue lunch at noon.
Participants are asked
to bring potluck salad or
side dish, outdoor clothing,
boots, gloves, rakes, magnet
