Cyclists and motorists:
Share the road
respect the others9 space and
prerogatives. Both have a
right to the road 4 but they
have to follow traffic rules.
Cyclists are allowed to
ride in the traffic lane and
ride side-by-side 4 but only
if they don9t impede traffic.
They are supposed to move
right and fall into single
file at the approach of a car.
When they don9t do that, it
really sets motorists teeth on
edge.

Spring has sprung; the
sun is shining and the roads
around Sisters beckon to
cyclists. It9s time for both
cyclists and motorists to
re-learn the annual ritual
of minimizing conflict on
shared roadways.
A little bit of courtesy,
patience and common sense
go a long way toward keep-
ing things neighborly.
Conflicts arise when one
or both sides of the motor-
ist-cyclist equation fail to

Civil War coming
to Camp Sherman
The Blue and the Gray
will again march against each
other on the lush meadows
along the Metolius River in
Camp Sherman.
The weekend of May
18-19 marks the sixth year
that the American Civil War
has come to Central Oregon.
The living history event
takes place in an expansive
meadow at the private House
On Metolius property near
Camp Sherman.
The event immerses visi-
tors in an open-air environ-
ment recreating the era of the
1860s. It is open to the pub-
lic from 9 a.m. to 5 p.,m. on
Saturday and from 9 a.m. to
4 p.m. on Sunday.
More than 160 reenactors
come from all over Oregon
and Washington to repre-
sent Northern and Southern
military units and civilians.
Each reenactor is a history
buff eager to impart some
knowledge about America in
the mid-19th century, during
our nation9s most tumultuous
period.
This living-history week-
end entertains visitors as they
learn about slavery, abolition,
state sovereignty and the role

Las Cafeteras — everyone belongs
By Katy Yoder
Correspondent
When Sisters Folk Festival
staff chose the theme for My
Own Two Hands, their inten-
tion was to be inclusive and
invite everyone in Sisters
Country to join them for the
festivities. <We All Belong=
has inspired contributing art-
ists like poster artist Carly
Garzon Vargas to create art
that reflects that message.
The choice of Las Cafeteras
to headline the free concert
Friday night, May 10, at The
Belfry is a way to continue
the celebration and intention
for inclusion.
Las Cafeteras bandmates
are an impressive group with
diverse musical expertise
and a myriad of academic
achievements. The band is
comprised of young people
raised in Los Angeles by par-
ents who were immigrants.
They have over 15 years
of collective experience in
education, organizing, cur-
riculum development, social
work, movement-building,
health and wellness, musical
performance and theatre. Las
Cafeteras offers workshops,
trainings, and residencies to
engage a variety of audiences.
Booking a band like Las
Cafeteras proved challenging
for Creative Director Brad
Tisdel; but he kept trying and
finally, Las Cafeteras will
travel to Sisters from their
home base in Los Angeles.
<We saw them two-and-
half years ago at Folk Alliance
International,= said Tisdel.
He and the Festival talent
committee loved the band
and tried to book them for
last year9s Folk Festival and
then again for this year, but it
didn9t work out.
<I believe they repre-
sent the theme of 8We All
Belong9 through their social-
justice work, both in and
out of school environments.
Choosing them is a great
way to engage our Latino
