Film showing to spark conversation
In an often-strident
climate where people —
even friends and neigh-
bors — seem to talk at or
past each other on difficult
social, political and cultural
issues, Steve Stratos is hop-
ing to spark a community
conversation.
The pastor at Sisters
Community Church is work-
ing with Sisters Movie House
to offer a free showing of
the classic drama “12 Angry
Men,” followed by a dis-
cussion session. The show-
ing is set for Wednesday,
November 14, at 7 p.m. and
free admittance is offered
to the first 90 people who
show up.
Stratos is hoping that that
turnout will represent a cross-
section of the community.
“The goal is to, initially,
get some of our church folks
to reach out to their neigh-
bors,” he said.
12 Angry Men is a taut
jury-room drama that reflects
how interactions between
people can quickly rise to
conflict that may or may not
have anything to do with the
issue at hand.
“Following the closing
arguments in a murder trial,
the 12 members of the jury
must deliberate, with a guilty
verdict meaning death for
the accused, an inner-city
teen. As the dozen men try to
reach a unanimous decision
while sequestered in a room,
one juror casts considerable

doubt on elements of the
case. Personal issues soon
rise to the surface, and con-
flict threatens to derail the
delicate process that will
decide one boy’s fate.”
The film screening is
part of an effort by Stratos
and members of Sisters
Community Church to reach
beyond the church commu-
nity, to overcome any sense
of exclusion and to engage
with the broader community.
The church plans to host
other film screenings and
talks with local authors and
other creatives, “just to have
conversations that are not
hostile, that are not filled
with all kinds of judgments
and presumptions.”
