6 Wednesday, October 10, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Outlaws crush volleyball foes By Rongi Yost Correspondent The Lady Outlaws crushed their league opponents last week, with a sweep over the Cougars at Cascade on Tuesday, October 2, and a sweep at home over Woodburn two days later. Sisters’ road contest at Cascade lasted all of 40 min- utes, as the Outlaws took down the Cougars in a three- set sweep with scores of 25-6, 25-9, and 25-14. The Outlaws took a com- manding 11-1 lead in the first set and never looked back. Their serving was spot-on, which debilitated Cascade, as they were never able to find their offensive rhythm. Sisters recorded 27 kills, three blocks, and nine aces on the night. “Our goal tonight was to maintain our level of play throughout the match,” said Coach Rory Rush. “We started strong and did just that. We have four games left this season, and are focusing on finishing strong.” Two days later, Sisters came out and walloped Woodburn in three quick sets. In the first set, the Outlaws jumped out with an early 9-1 lead behind great serves from Sydney Head and Sam Silva. Serves proved to by key in the first-set win. The Lady Bulldog’s offense was sty- mied and they were unable to execute. The Outlaws cruised to a quick 25-8 win. The following two sets showed the Lady Outlaw’s versatility, as new rotations were tried, and everyone got time on the court. Sisters maintained the tempo of the game, and sets were marked by strong serves and great passes. Sisters took the sec- ond set 25-14. In the third, the Outlaws shot out front with an 11-1 lead, and sailed to a 25-10 win. “We did a nice job of main- taining our level of play and finishing strong,” said Rush. “Our goal was to serve tough, and clean up our unforced errors, and we did that well. We are excited for this week- end (Clearwater Classic) to see some of the top teams in the state at all classifications.” The Outlaws are currently 8-1 in league and 14-4 over- all. Sisters was scheduled to travel to Philomath on Monday, October 8. They will host Stayton on Wednesday, October 10. Boys show spark at Philomath cross-country meet By Charlie Kanzig Correspondent Kolby Spink of Newport took the pace out hard at the Paul Mariman Invitational on Saturday, October 6. He must have been largely unaware of the battle taking place behind him for the runner-up spot. On the other hand, Ethan Hosang of Sisters, running a patient, smart race, was keenly aware as he moved up into the top four midway in the 5,000 meter race. He put the hammer down over the last 1,000 meters in his quest for second place. In the end, Hosang was overtaken by Brenden Jensen in the final 100 meters to fin- ish third in 17:00 flat, just a second behind Jensen. “Wow!” said Head Coach Josh Nordell. “Ethan ran a model race, showing not only poise, but incredible gutsiness. I couldn’t be more pleased with him.” Spink’s winning time was 16:45 and he remains the top contender in the Oregon West league and is ranked among the top runners in the 4A classification. Sam May (18:34) and Josh Liddell (18:43) paired up to finish in 25th and 28th among 83 racers. Austin Pade (19:26) and Vicente Rebolledo (19:31) completed the scoring for the Outlaws as the team finished in fifth place with 145 points. Newport edged Philomath 63-70 to win the team title. Jackson Rheuben also raced with the varsity and clocked 20:50 for the 3.1- mile course. “We’re really still learn- ing how to run a complete race as a team,” said Nordell. “These guys are motivated to improve and learn more each week. I like what I am seeing.” The Outlaws were without season leader John Peckham, who missed the race due to a family obligation. He ran a race of his own on Thursday at the Regis Invitational held at Stayton Middle School, where he also finished third behind two other state lead- ers, Matthew Frazeur and Ben Kirby of Stayton. Frazeur prevailed on his home turf by one second over his teammate in 16:30. Peckham finished 12 seconds later with a new personal best over the rugged course. “It’s a sign of John’s dedication and competitive- ness that he wanted to make sure and get a good race in, so it worked out perfectly to have him go up against two of the guys he will see at our PHOTO BY CHARLIE KANZIG Ethan Hosang looking tough midway through the Paul Mariman Invitational Saturday, where he placed third. Oregon West District meet and hopefully also at state,” said Nordell. Spink, Frazeur, Kirby and Peckham all rank among the top 11 individuals among 4A runners and they all belong to the Oregon West Conference. “The Oregon West is pretty loaded on the boys’ side and it’s going to be a fight when the District meet arrives,” said Nordell. But first, the Outlaws will undertake valuable training until the Country Fair Classic hosted by Elmira High School on October 17. The District meet will be held at Lane Community College on Thursday, October 25. Veterans’ Services Serving those who’ve served. 541-585-VETS (8387) | www.deschutes.org/vets Smile, Sisters!
